If you do a little searching on this forum, you can find the threads where we discussed the events after they were held and included the photo-documentation.
It has seemed to work best for us to have some discussion early on as to who is interested in joining the fun and what the preferences are for the date of the main event. Once we reach some degree of agreement on the date, then we hammer out details on where it will be held and what the activities will be.
For most years, the main event has been either a late lunch or dinner held either downtown or on the strip, with some degree of social interaction around the meal. This often includes a bunch of BS, a trivia contest organized by our esteemed leader, and a group photo of all those who are willing to have their images posted in this forum. Following that, we typically head to some place for the group to gamble a bit. Back in 2011, we headed to Binions for poker. Other years, we have had groups playing craps at Main Street Station, California, El Cortez, and Casino Royale. Poker and craps have been chosen because of the greater ability to have a significant number of WoV members participating at the same table. Some people don't really like those games, so we have also spread the fun to other card games.
There has also developed a tradition of a significant subset of the group gathering the evening before at Main Street Station for dinner and craps. We have also had group events taking place on Sunday evening -- I remember a gathering at Fiesta Henderson when Paigow Dan was dealing there, and last year a few of us had Sunday dinner at the Triple George Grill downtown, followed by more gaming across the street at the Downtown Grand.
With those rambling paragraphs as background for the newcomers, this thread is focused on deciding just when we should try to gather for this year's fling. In previous discussions like this, it seems to have been of value NOT to leave things completely open for argument but to start with a suggested date and let folks say why something else would be better. For that reason (in part), I have focused this poll on a suggested date of Saturday 4/16/16 and provided alternatives both earlier and later in the spring. I will confess right up front that the 4/16 date reflects a bias on my part -- I have some non-forum friends who plan to be in Las Vegas from 4/11 through 4/15, and it would be very nice (from my perspective) if I could meet with them in Las Vegas while using the same airline ticket that lets me visit with my WoV friends.
So what works for you folks? If there is strong interest in May or June, we can run another poll to find a specific date. Whenever we get that point resolved, we can start discussing the details of Where? and What? for the main event. So let's hear from everyone who thinks they would like to be part of the 2016 Spring Fling!
Quote: WizardMarch, April, and early June are all fine with me.
Except for Easter weekend, this is true for me too. I voted for 4/16 in the poll since that exact date does work for me.
April 16th actually sounds perfect to me. I was already discussing that time frame for another trip with my business partner and we both said "Let's see when the Spring Fling is because it's fun to meet up with everyone." Thus, my teammate and I are just fine with 4/16 as well!

I will prolly not be able to participate in the upcoming WOV spring fling. I know that is a disappointment to many (joke) but I am keeping my calendar open for later events. One day, I will show up, if the miss's gives me permission. That day may be long in the making........Quote: AxelWolfShe doesn't post here anymore. Is she active on DT?
I don't know. She came for much of May last year, and the same thoughts occurred to me. I sent her a PM about this thread immediately after my original post.Quote: WizardWhen is Nareed's annual Vegas vacation? We seem to always do it when she is here.
Edit: She's read the PM but not replied.
Quote: BozI would love it to be the April 9th weekend as I'll be there for the Pacquio Bradley fight.
Wouldn't that weekend be expensive for rooms or is it not that big of a deal?
April 16th is bad for me. My timing is always so messed up. Our sons bday party is that weekeend. I just yelled out to my wife that I couldn't make it to the party because of this meet and I felt her stare through 3 walls.
Just about any other week would be good.

I don't think it's a crazy weekend as this fight isn't drawing a lot of attention. Kind of like a sold out concert at MGM, which happens most weekends. Cinco weekend will be crazier with Canelo-Khan drawing big crowds from England and Mexico.

This settles it -- April 16'th it is!

The trivia questions are gaffed anyway, I got no idea what's even being asked. ie:
1) "In the 47'th episode of Star Trek, what is the millenium falcon's triangulated coordinates? Answer must be +/- 1 giga-parsec."
Me: "Uhh....darth vader?"
Other people: "Starting off easy, huh Mike? What's this, a freebie question?"
2) "Famous philoanthropheosologist Cornelius Deju Lem'uiox died of which rare disease in the year 1273 BC?"
3) "The most recent person to die of that disease (in Q#2), died in 1822 AD -- what was his/her brother's invention which has revolutionized today's macroatmospheric jentacularity?"
Me: "SERIOUSLY I KNOW NONE OF THESE MADE UP WORDS MIKE."
*10 more questions that are all related to #2 and #3*
14) "The continuum transfuctioner's mystery is only exceeded by what?"
14b) "No, not talking about the item in the movie, Dude, where's my Car?.
15) "If you have many dogs, say, pi raised to the square-root of the amount of dogs you had 13 years ago, but gave away a dog every day on your birthday for every year old you were, and you continue to do this forever [assume you can live forever], then how old are you right now and how many years will it take before you run out of dogs? HUGE HINT: The amount dogs you will own in 3 years is is the reverse prime of the sagitorial efficiency of uranium."

Shot through the heart
Quote: SOOPOOI attended one, and if I remember correctly Mike couldn't attend due to family issues. It was still worth the trip and enjoyable to meet a dozen or so of the regulars. I have around a 10% chance of making it April 16. Best weekends for me at closer to 50%, are May 14 or 21. I hope to arrange another WoV meet up in Niagara Falls/Buffalo for the summer. I'll start a separate thread when I come up with some possible dates.
I will be in Niagara either June 10thish or Aug 14thish.
Shut it axel
Nareed can't come at all; GWAE can't make 4/16; Boz prefers 4/9, and SOOPOO prefers dates in May -- a month that apparently doesn't work for the Wizard. On the other hand, 4/16 has been specifically endorsed by rdw4potus, Romes, PokerGrinder, BeachBumBabs, Wizardofnothing, and me.
With those results so far and with the two days of near silence, I think I will go ahead and declare 4/16 the winner. (What? You think I'm biased or something?) That will allow those of us who need to make plane and lodging reservations plenty of time to work those things out.
Next, it will be time to establish the What? and Where? So ... summarizing history once again from my notes:
2011 WoVCon (on a Wednesday): 2pm lunch at the MSS Brew pub, followed by poker at Binions and a few of us gathering for supper.
2012 WoVCon ][: Main event -- noon lunch at Chicago Brewing Co. at Four Queens, followed by gaming at El Cortez. Friday night group gaming at MSS and Sunday evening play at Fiesta Henderson.
2013 WoVCon ///: Main event -- noon lunch (scheduled but then delayed slightly by the Wizard's car problems) at the Sugar Factory at Paris, followed by craps at Casino Royale. Friday afternoon craps at MSS followed by dinner at the MSS buffet.
2014 Spring Fling: Main event -- noon at Triple 7 at MSS, followed by craps at California. I don't have notes about Friday or Sunday events for the group.
2015 Spring Fling: Main event -- dinner at Triple 7 at MSS, preceeded by craps for some of us at MSS and followed by gaming at the Downtown Grand. Friday evening we met at Triple 7 but walked to Triple George for dinner then back to MSS for craps, where a couple more joined us. Dinner at the Triple George again on Sunday evening for a few of us, then played at the Downtown Grand.
I suspect that once again this year there will be some kind of group event on Friday afternoon or evening, and it seems there is a pseudo-tradition of at least starting at MSS. My only reservation about continuing that plan is that if it is decided to have the main event there, some may feel there is too much concentration on one establishment.
Once again showing my biases, I think there might be some advantages of having a local involved in planning the details of the Main Event, and since we rely on the Wizard to generate the semi-impossible trivia questions, there at least needs to be some coordination with him.
Rather than starting the What?-Where? thread myself right now, I thought I would redirect this thread to see whether there is a volunteer (perhaps a local LV one) who would like to take care of those details. Anyone?
I'll for sure have one teammate with me, and very more than likely a 2nd (a girl, oh my). So you can more/less add 2 more to the list.
Quote: RomesI know in years past a couple people (DJT?) suggested group poker. Will any place reserve an entire table for us? Is this something people want to do? I'd probably rather play some craps so we can try to win the house's money, but I"m up for whatever! All I know is I attended last year, and Friday we did the Escape Room. Saturday I missed any "gambling" portion so I've never even gambled with someone from WoV =p.

And you mentioned a 'girl', any details? Pics maybe? PM is acceptable.....
Yes, that is all a joke. I'm pissed cause I can't be there, prolly...
Quote: Romes... group poker. Will any place reserve an entire table for us?
When we played at Binion's in 2011, we brought 9 people at once, in mid-afternoon, so they opened a new table for us. A 10th player joined the table later, so it wasn't exactly a private WoV table. I think it was 1-2 limit Texas hold 'em (Edit: Found the old wrap-up thread where the Wizard said it was 2-4), and I lost ten bucks. That suggests a clear advantage over my going to a craps table where I lose much more rapidly, but I don't think I have played poker since that day. I suspect I would play about as effectively if I exposed my hand like in a shoe-dealt game of blackjack. Basically, I don't know what I am doing at poker.
I'll have to ask the fiancee what her thoughts are. I'd guess that she may play craps with us, but she would not play poker. Probably, she'd just find a "lucky" slot and abstain completely from the gaming part of our event.
Edit: Oh, yeah, I'm probably +1 for this weekend.
To follow up on that -- of course my wife will be with me for the trip and any meals, but she will definitely not join in any group gambling. I can't even get her to join me at a table when just the two of us go to a casino. She occasionally plays penny slots a little.Quote: rdw4potusEdit: Oh, yeah, I'm probably +1 for this weekend.

Me? I may have mentioned poker for a G2E meetup. I've never attended the spring meets. But I might this year. I'll let you know...Quote: RomesI know in years past a couple people (DJT?) suggested group poker.
This was my other thought. If we go somewhere with 9-10 people they'll open a new table and it'll just be ours. Most anywhere should do this. Though as you pointed out, it's not technically considered a "private" table.Quote: DocWhen we played at Binion's in 2011, we brought 9 people at once, in mid-afternoon, so they opened a new table for us...
Ha, well we wouldn't be playing anything team "in house" with other WoV members! Trust me, every girl I've ever had any "gambling" association with LOVES to try to beat me out of money for some reason. I've had ex-gf's sign up secretly on poker sites and play on my tables to try to say they beat me. Luckily enough for me no cold decks and none of them have claimed that prize =P.Quote: TwoFeathersATLNot sure if playing in 'teams' should be allowed.

Quote: DocI found the original WoVCon wrap-up thread here. Surprisingly, I won that trivia contest. The Wizard started out with six or seven questions directed at my generation, giving me a headstart that others couldn't overcome, even after he shifted to topics about which I know nothing. I didn't read through that thread, but I think all of the questions were listed. Of course, I think non-attendees claimed they would have known 90+% of the answers.
I would have gotten 2 right lol. I'm a university graduate and all I would have gotten right was who won the Super Bowl and the Burroughs of New York.
Craps and PGP is up my alley. Poker not so much. Never even played it at a casino or poker room, only a few times among friends.
