I can give a warning or a suspension whenever I wish, much like the police can issue a warning or write a ticket based on their best judgement. I tend to give warnings first for the lesser offenses like thumb-tacking and making a new thread for a topic when the topic is already discussed in another recent thread.
How is it that a poster gets bounced for "b1atch" yet BBB gets a bye for "shithole?"
She penned "...shithole countries" in the Trump thread.
Rule 6 is clear: " Profanity is prohibited, especially the F word. (Amended 2/23/14 to not allow profanity at all. The previous policy was more lenient.)"
note: I'm not gunning for Babs, I just like to know where the line is drawn so that I don't cross it.

The "b1atch" suspension was for a personal insult, not profanity. It did not fool the administrators what the poster really meant.
As to your second point, I assume that BBB was quoting the president. Personally, I would have still masked it, out of an abundance of caution, but it was a newsworthy comment the president made and worthy of discussion. I think we're all mature enough to take it, but we don't need this forum turning into a cesspool with the word getting bandied about right and left.
The short answer is context.
Quote: ams288Boz and Billryan both suspended at the same time for personal insults - but ones not directed at each other. That’s kind of ironic.
I’m in Vegas now, I wonder if they’ll be meeting up for a steak dinner somewhere while in timeout?
Last summer, boz was in town and I was told wanted to meet up. I told his go between that I would be at a 51s baseball game and I'd leave tickets for them if they wanted to attend. Never heard back.

Boz will be back in town next week too, but I usually just don’t have enough time to get together with everyone. I have a long time friend that runs one of the major breweries in town and we usually do something. I also try to hit a few favorite other places I’ve come to enjoy on my trips. It’s like anywhere I assume, when you only get somewhere a few times a year, you try to fit too much in too little time and the day flies away. Things you take as mundane when you live somewhere are exciting to visitors. Just a visit to the Pioneer for a burger and a couple beers makes my day. I see it all the time when we have visitors down to Florida.
You and I disagree on almost everything, but I know you are ethical as they come from everything I have been told about you. I like to believe others see the same in me once they know me. That’s probably up for debate by some.
Either way Bill, thanks for the previous invite and maybe we will meet at a group event sometime. Or a wrestling event, lol.

I inserted a ! in place of the i in the word, but I was also quoting the president. The ! has been a mask for quite a few people, so I used it. We can certainly go back to just suspending people for using the word, masked or not. That should take out about 2 people a day, maybe more.
And no, counselor, I don't think that was a point of order. Sing it with me.

Brah you just painted a target on your back. If I was mod I would have a bounty on you, side bets on member/members involved in your suspension. Nathan would be the favorite.
Quote: GialmereI'm new here and haven't read this whole thread but what about low level swear words like [rhymes with 'ram'] or [H E double hockey sticks]? They're useful enhancement words when writing informally as in... "The game had so many rules I couldn't figure the [rhymes with 'ram'] thing out." Or... "We had a [H E double hockey sticks]uva good time at the craps table last night!" Are these words allowed or would they put this forum back on a slippery slope down to [H E double hockey sticks]?
The guidance is to keep it PG. Nothing you mentioned is a problem. F-bombs are a problem. C-word about women is a problem (and in general). As is c*s*er. Etc.
Blatant sexual references should be avoided.
The larger problem is usually personal insults. Calling someone a (blank), whether it's a cuss word or not, will get you suspended. Saying something they said is crappy will not.
Wizard has said previously, "if you must swear, mask it". So s#!+ would be masked, as an example. As are my "don't" list above.
Again, this is guidance, not set in stone (as it's not up to me). The moderators reserve the right to do as we see fit.

FWIW the connection Trump had to the phrase escaped me at that time: I thought it was your own thought.

I'm one of the moderators here and I'll give you my interpretation. Other moderators may differ.
'Hell' is ok and I doubt any mod would punish the use of 'damn' or even 'crap', though you might use a bit of masking to make it 'cr4p'. 'Bull...t' would be normally be masked with stars or character substitution or just abbreviated to BS.
Anything stronger and you are probably best just not using the word.
Context matters too, of course. We had someone recently suspended where he effectively called a member a 'ba1tch' or something like that. The suspension was not for the masked word but for the personal insult.
These restrictions might seem rather censorial or extreme, but some folks push the boundaries of free speech (Which the Wizard is keen on) and he just doesn't want expletives here.

I’m part Australian probably. You’re not going to discriminate against my native tongue, are you? I understand for non-Australians it should be off limits. But not for us Aussies.

Does the second offense need to occur within 1 week? 10 days? 2 weeks?

Thanks. I was just curious because recently two different posters were both suspended twice and the time-frame between the offenses for each of them was 8 days. One poster got 3 days and the other poster got 7 days.

The mods have a suspension roulette wheel. Do something that is an offense against the rules of the board, they spin the wheel.
The wheel's house advantage is very high.

Depends on how strong you are with the force, think the 7 day suspensions are for siths. All you have to do to not get suspended is be polite to people, or be one of the untouchables, did you notice that?Quote: FleaswatterThanks. Ya know, that's a lot of garbage.
Polite, yes, totally. That's the point.
Untouchable, I object to.
No question, there is some leeway, and some subjectivity among moderators.
There is a lot more to consider as well:
The severity of the infraction. Subcategories.
How rude.
Whether it's a single slight or more.
Whether it's a failed joke.
Whether it was ad hominem.
Whether it was profane or blue.
Whether it was direct or implied.
The length of time the person has been a member.
The number of previous offenses.
The overall value the person brings to the forum.
What was said that might have provoked them.
Other things that may show up in a particular case.
Not all of those apply in every situation.
I gave the 3 day under discussion, for example. I did not initially think it warranted a suspension. It was indirect, mild, singular, meant as a jab more than an insult. I could not deny, however, the validity of the complaints I received about its incivility, and that it was directed at a person who, through his own suspension, was unable to reply.
So I issued the suspension, and don't deny it could have been 7 days due to the short period of time since his last one. But I did not feel the remark rose to the level of a Martingale. So it was 3 day.
Equally valid arguments can be made for no suspension, 3 day, 7 day, on this one. Less valid but still legitimate argument can be made for longer.
And, yeah, I've met him several times at events. I usually agree with him politically. But I still suspended him, even though I didn't take his remark as harshly as some other people. All in the name of trying to be fair within the framework of the rules.
It would be great if people understood that we do try and be as even-handed as possible, while dealing with almost-unique circumstances each time. A little trust would be appreciated, here and there. /rant
So, I figure this place is working just as well as the real one.
What more can one expect?

It's not always serious, I like saying people are untouchable because some people believe it and to some degree it trolls the off-forum rejects.
