The markup code for a link seems to no longer work. Not a big deal, but restoring the capability would be nice. Some of us like to style our posts.

Testing, testing . . .

Here’s my website Dave Miller Gaming for the games I created, and some other stuff.

Seems to work for me.

I can only imagine that a minor typographical error confused things.

link= test
url= test

Indeed that one works, but I was referencing a URL that resolved all the way to a page name and file extension, which did not work.

The link I couldn’t get to work is on a post I made earlier today. Given that Mike closed the thread and issued a warning to all posters, I’m not going to reference it here. If you can find it, you will see the general URL form that didn’t work for me.

I'm pretty sure I found the post and link you're talking about.

The link worked for me - taking me to the NY Daily News article you referenced.

Did it NOT WORK, or not take you to the article you wanted? I mean, maybe there's pay-wall issues with the Daly News.

Problem solved; the site Help section for formatting codes specifies “link” rather than “url” in the markup syntax. Thanks for taking a look. Mea culpa for blindly following the documentation.

I believe that url= and link= work identically, although the closure tag has to match the opening tag.

I know I prefer to use url=, because it's shorter.

Anyway, glad you're sorted out.

The preview for using link formatting markup renders as an ugly mess in message preview whether using “link” or “url” on an iPhone. However, the actual post is fine. That seems to apply to only the original message preview. A preview while editing the post presents a strange but usable presentation. What fun! Perhaps this is WebKit related.

I had almost forgotten that the ancient layout style ever existed.

Working for me on Chrome.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

See this example:

https://wizardofvegas.com/forum/gambling/poker/37292-video-poker-probability/#post854442

The difference seems to be I didn’t preview the post as I usually do. What is presented in the post is the junk I see in the preview. Then again, perhaps having nothing but a link for the post was a factor.

One cannot help but observe the errant space between the = and the URL in the tag.

Let me try...

Woo!

' rel='nofollow' target='_blank'>https://wizardofodds.com] Misformatted on purpose

It's easy to let an extra space slip in, and that's what it looks like.

This may be an artifact of a "feature" of MacOS and Safari called "Smart Copy/Paste".

I am not a Safari user, but rumors on the tech support forums seem to suggest that using command-shift-option-V to "paste and match style" may prevent the errant space inclusion.
It may also be possible to disable this helpful feature in Safari, via a hidden or buried preference.
It may be possible to use an alternate way to copy text. Double-click to select seems to add a protective space for some users; drag-select seems to omit the errant protective space.
It is likely possible to do the normal copy/paste of a URL, then delete the errant space.
May the cards fall in your favor.

Thanks for doing the additional research, Dieter! You identified the problem. When composing or editing a post a panel controlled by WebKit is in use with a Done button indicating this fact. Typically, modern reference URL’s have a length that will cause a line wrap when pasted. This masks the fact that a space character was also inserted. A proportional font is in use so when you add a line break to restore the markup format, the reduced space kerning affords the space character makes it hard to spot that added character. The link is presented properly if the added space character is removed. That does it for me; the methods described for possibly preventing the insertion of a space might be of interest to others.

Amusing images of using all the fingers of both hands to simultaneously depress all the special mode keys while punching the V with one's nose will persist in my mind for a bit, I'm afraid.

Glad you're sorted. ;)

I should note:
This problem only pops up if you try to use a formatting tag with your pasted URL (something with [brackets]).

If you insert a raw URL into the post, it should work, it just won't be stylish.

Example: https://wizardofodds.com
