The forum will be down for a little while tonight for some updates. It will probably be around midnight Pacific time, or sooner if I happen to check in at a time when nobody is online. Here is what's is included in tonight's update:
1) You will be able to send a private message to yourself. A lot of people really wanted to be able to do this, so after tonight's update they will be able to. I, however, will continue to talk to myself the old fashioned way -- out loud. :)
2) The problem with too many emails being sent when a subscribed thread is replied to should be fixed with this update.
3) Threads can now be split up into two threads, in the event that the original one starts getting off-topic.
The downtime shouldn't be more than 20 minutes at the most. I will reply to this thread after the update is complete.

The update is now complete.
For those who subscribe to threads, please let me know by posting in this thread if the quantity and/or timing of the emails you receive are not what they should be.
A quick note about private messages that you send to yourself: if you delete a private message that you sent to yourself, it will be deleted from both your inbox and your outbox at the same time -- even if you only deleted it from your inbox or only deleted it from your outbox.

can someone explain the thinking behind messages to yourself?

That would be my guess as well. and without making them public in a blog.

If he were able to gamble he would not be on the forum so much.

Maybe he's posting with his mobile phone in between spins of the roulette wheel. That would be some impressive multitasking!

By either Wizard or myself. I may even use it on this thread to move the unrelated posts to an off-topic thread.

Trust me when I say that it's usually in the best interest to NOT split threads - unless the split is just a simple split. Cherry-picking posts to move creates havoc.

I think the splitting of threads is a good idea if it is used to stop the "hijacking" of a current thread.
Two current examples:
1) https://wizardofvegas.com/forum/gambling/betting-systems/2794-craps-strategy-investment-opportunity/
There has been an attempt to clean up this VERY LONG thread.
2) https://wizardofvegas.com/forum/gambling/betting-systems/2967-will-98steps-prevail/
This thread became the home of two topics. The original about 98 steps winning his "challenge"
and The "Rob Singer" soap opera with all the name calling added for extra flavor.
There should be a way to stop the "hijacking of threads"
Some threads have posts that are just small comments that do not pertain to the thread's topic, kind of like idle conversation and not harmful to the current thread.
but then there are threads that are totally hijacked.
The aggressive hijacking now makes the current thread longer, and very difficult to read thru and follow the original thread topic.
Those posts "hijacking" the thread still may have value in their own thread and those should be moved to another.
The name calling and total uncalled for child behaviour that happens in threads, I flag, most of us should, so that type of s**t can be stopped.
