What is the consensus opinion of when a bet would be dead
Not looking to get freerolled and given that there are no updates .... she could easily either disappear or simply resurface if and when she either loses the weight and or has surgery to loss the weight. I'm. Not necessarily looking to cancel the wager ... moreso just curious what the forum thinks

You have to look at the terms of the bet again and decide whether or not she has violated them.
The fact she has declined to give updates is a poor one--the thing that makes sports bets more interesting to the average bettor is getting to see the action unfold. That does not negate the bet, though, if she did not promise updates. The surgery question is interesting--what will you have but her word that she didn't have surgery if there is nothing to follow along the way?
I've got action in that challenge and I accept that she has NOT violated the terms. Not in the letter of the wager: Not in the spirit of the wager.Quote: RonCYou have to look at the terms of the bet again and decide whether or not she has violated them.
The bet is still live and if she or I come to collect on that bet at the end of term, then it will surely be honoured.
What we have to remember is that HB found herself on the receiving end of much scrutiny, subtle and blunt criticism and blunt personal attacks.
Attacks about her integrity,
Attacks about her 'class',
Attacks about her willingness, inclination or ability to pay,
Attacks about her motivation,
Attacks about her life choices
Attacks about her method of working towards her goal.
By what right?
We might not have been sensitive to how she would feel about those attacks, but she is as entitled to take offence as any of us would be.
Maybe she was unwise to put herself in the spotlight, but that doesn't give us a right to pick on her.
Maybe she could have expected it. That doesn't make it right.
Maybe she could have brushed it off or taken it as banter, but she is not 'we'.
She's an individual, in a forum of wolves. That makes her vulnerable.
Wolves will be wolves. Dammit, we tear enough new members to shreds because of their system posts. Isn't that bad enough without turning on 'our own'?
OK. I was disappointed that HB flipped. I'll be disappointed if she doesn't provide some updates, partly because I want to cheer her on.
But IMHO, she was entitled to flip, she is entitled to deny updates as retaliation.
We wolves got a well deserved thump on the nose. Live with it.
Unless and until HB breaks any rules she is a member in good standing here. We should treat her with the respect that deserves.
The challenge continues no different to how it left off.
Non-surgery was just about the only stipulation in my part of the wager.Quote: WizardofnothingThe surgery was always always an issue and I mentioned it more than a couple times- I definitely think it's a strong possibility now
But the fact is, that come target day, HB will be required to reveal her weight in a way that is acceptable to those who wagered. Simple as.
That may be as trivial as her declaring her weight as displayed to HER on a digital scale. Some of us will take that on trust.
What do we expect? The individual right to give her a full physical examination? Of course not.
Ultimately we chose to trust her to be as good as her word. Why would we assume that she would lie? Do we make wagers with people we don't trust without taking into account a tiny risk of deceit?
She won't take the surgery route and if she does, then she will declare it.
I have it agreed with her that she will meet the weigh-in terms that she has agreed with Mike. I'm not even bothered by the details. Come the big day, if Mike says he was satisfied by the weigh in, then I will be too. If not, then... well that will be the same as a no-show as far as I see it.Quote: WizardofnothingWell- ifnyou recall that's why a video with a newspaper was required at weigh in..... so clearly we don't just say tell us your weight
Forward me her number please (-;Quote: WizardWoN, your OP comes very close to the "personal insult" line, inferring that another forum member is a dead beat and will welsh (or is it welch?) on the bet if she loses. I'm sure you could argue you never said those things directly, but the implication is pretty clear. Since you did raise it somewhat like a question, I'll reluctantly let it go with a warning. If HB files a complaint, I will have to issue a suspension.
Huh?Quote: WizardWoN, your OP comes very close to the "personal insult" line, inferring that another forum member is a dead beat and will welsh (or is it welch?) on the bet if she loses. You've got to be kinding.
His post was fine.
As for welshing on a bet: IF "someone" were to welsh on a bet made here, what consequences would you impose, if any, and why / why not?

Beauty, and ugliness, is in the eye of the admin. I will confess that maybe I have a different standard when the victim is female, as I believe a gentleman should never even come close to insulting a woman, no matter how deserving.
The only precedent is that StrictlyAP was nuked for welching on a bet with AyeCarumba and not submitting to mediation about it.
Not honoring a bet, stealing from, cheating someome, coning someone, constantly harassing, threatening, a possible danger to members of the forum etc. Should be a good enough reason to ban someone. Why would anyone want that kind of person on the forum?
It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt.
Letting someone get away with a small amount or whatever might lead them to thinking they can get away with more.
If something serious happens then I wonder who's going to get blamed In the end? Everyone will be outraged and claim something should have been done sooner.

Lol and I thought I was an old school Gentleman. Jeez how we must be perceived by the fairer sex.
Suckers? MCPs? Nice guys? Creeps?
I believe a gentleman should never even come close to slapping a woman, no matter how deserving.
Mike... Only kidding with you sir...
Ladies... Ignore the Limey guy, he's been on the sherry.
$:o)
Seriously, I hope HB laughs off any possible sleight from WON. No need for suspensions. We want fun and laughter.
What if she likes it rough?Quote: OnceDearLol and I thought I was an old school Gentleman. Jeez how we must be perceived by the fairer sex.

LOL.
Just my luck to get a punch in the face.

I would agree if you said that a "lady" should never be insulted, as by definition a "lady" would never do or say anything worthy of censure.
Contrast "lady" with "woman," and the chauvinistic, paternalistic, Old School Wall of Protection is gone.
Quote: onenickelmiracleI had thought Wizard had imposed she must give updates to even post her thread bet in the first place. I don't really think it is fair for him to even post publicly WoN would be suspended if she complained, because she'll complain just to exert her power over Wizard. If leniency has been granted, it should remain granted and not in her hands.
I'll stick my neck out and say HB is better than that, . .
. . . If she was sleighted by WON, she is well able to slap him into place without calling on the authority of Mike
