We have instituted a new short-term restriction on Private Messages from new Forum members. For 3 days after joining the WOV Forum a new member will be unable to send private messages to non-administrator members. They will continue to be able to contact administrators during that period. After the probationary 3-day period is over the new users will be able to fully use the Private Message system to contact other members.
The purpose of this new restriction on new members is to enhance our cybersecurity posture.
Please report any inappropriate use of the Private Message system to either Dieter or gordonm888 as soon as it occurs.

Should be a week not three days. What business does a new member have of contacting any of us anyway in less than a week.

I can think of a handful of legitimate reasons.
Hopefully nothing of value comes up so urgently that it can't simmer that long.
I do believe it is much more likely that someone new will need to message an admin than a non-admin.

We can always lengthen it if it becomes clear that 3 days probationary period is not enough.
Our immediate focus is on a countermeasure for sacrificial socks - people creating sock puppets that they know will be quickly banned but using the brief existence of the sock puppet to send harassing messages to Forum members (as well as making objectionable posts.) Given that PMs are completely invisible to the admins (as they should be), we're asking again that if you do get a harassing PM that you notify Dieter or I ASAP.

Ww have a Thank You button which enables us to say thank you, but perhaps we need a WTF button as well.
