Congratulations! But just a reminder…. Only old people get lifetime achievement awards!
Is there a formal presentation that accompanies this award? I’ll bet a bunch of forum members would attend. (The AP’s would come in disguise, of course…..)

When I first saw this picture I thought it was a Native American behind the table. It's the hair and the facial expression and the sing around his neck. I actually did a double take. LOL
I cut my hair in May, so look normal again. This is a private conference, so unless you pay for the whole thing, it's not open to the public. However, I can probably sneak a couple people in, if any forum members are in town.

This got me curious so I googled some "young" lifetime achievement award winners.
Tom Hanks got an AFI Life Achievement Award at 46.
CEO Angel Rich-Jones won a Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award at 36.
Selena won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the age of 23, but it was posthumous and she had been dead for over 25 years. Technically counts as a win, though!

I can attend as your personal physician.
I’ve been involved in these for years at my Anesthesia yearly conference. The honoree usually has a bunch of family members present.
I can attend as your brother as well.

Who, not what. The founder of the conference presenting the award.
Richard Marcus is a well-known self-proclaimed #1 casino cheat in the world who is said to have invented the Savannah move. The move was quick easy and effective.Quote: EvenBobQuote: mcallister3200Deserved, however accepting an award bestowed by a lifelong grifting scumbag has to be a difficult choice one would think.

It's surprising you didn't know this his name is synonymous with roulette including but not limited to being the author of American Roulette.

I know who Richard Marcus is, I read his book at least twice. When I said what are you talking about I was referring to calling him a grifting scumbag. Richard Marcus is not a grifting scumbag. The only reason he got away with his moves was there was no cameras in those days. Today he would last for about 5 minutes.

I wouldn’t agree that he’s a grifter, but I could understand someone calling him a scumbag.
I did an article on him several years ago, but it appears something happened to the page as the better part of the article is missing. I’ll have to check my Google Docs to see if I still have it, but I seriously doubt if I do.
Anyway, he got his start as a dealer at the El Cortez, wherein he was approached by some nefarious types about false shuffling (while on duty) to the benefit of confederates. Essentially, he engaged in a premeditated plan to steal money from his employer.
After that, he would develop methods for cheating at games such as Craps and Roulette, perhaps the most well-known of which is his, “Savannah Move.”
Marcus would justify these things by as much as saying that the casino industry is evil and predatory. Of course, those words ring a bit hollow, given that he had no problem accepting the industry’s money in exchange for teaching it how to prevent other people from bilking it exactly as he did, or similar.
In short, this is hypocrisy of absolutely the highest order. Therefore, I think, ‘Scumbag,’ is defensible.
Me? I’m not going to shed any tears for the casinos he stole from, but at the same time, I see a legitimate difference between an actual advantage player (beating the games/promotions without blatantly cheating) and Richard Marcus, who committed outright theft, including against his own employer.
Of course, the schedule is the schedule. If Wizard is being presented a well-deserved award, why should he object to the person giving it to him? I can’t imagine he has a ton of say in the matter anyway.
In any event, I think it’s fair to say that Richard Marcus used to be a thief (by his own admission) and could fairly be argued to have behaved hypocritically (working for casinos to prevent the very actions he tried to justify), but I’m unsure that grifter is ever an apt description. Maybe there’s something I missed.
“Scumbag,” that’s an optional word. Either way, I don’t know that he’s a scumbag now. I certainly don’t have any interest in spending any great amount of time with him to find out.
Of course, also being capable of hypocrisy, I probably wouldn’t refuse if he wanted me to interview him.
Then mcallister3200's post should have been very obvious.Quote: EvenBobQuote: AxelWolfRichard Marcus is a well-known self-proclaimed #1 casino cheat in the world who is said to have invented the Savannah move. Not to tip what I believe to be his...eh...'tactics' isn't exactly the right word...but it's a close word.
Anyway, EB has been here for a long-time. I wouldn't call it an MO, but I have seen EB occasionally take positions that I don't think he actually believes, or that are very difficult to defend, just for the purpose of engagement. That's just my observation and could be inaccurate. On the other hand, has he ever specifically referred to AP's, or (unlike AP's) other people specifically stealing/trying to steal (from casinos) as scumbags? If not, then perhaps...while he wouldn't commit crimes himself...EB thinks anything is kosher as far as casinos are concerned.
I do think it's an odd take that Marcus getting away with it (due to poor surveillance), by implication of being in the same post, is in any way relevant to whether or not Marcus is, or was, a scumbag.
To be clear, I'm not agreeing with or in disagreement with calling the guy a grifting scumbag, I was just pointing out that it was obvious as to what and why mcallister was saying.Quote: TigerWuQuote: AxelWolfThen mcallister3200's post should have been very obvious.Quote: EvenBobQuote: AxelWolfRichard Marcus is a well-known self-proclaimed #1 casino cheat in the world who is said to have invented the Savannah move. EB tried shaming me for using liberal return policies at big box stores. Meanwhile, he admitted to wanting to engage in a similar type of scheme.Quote: Mission146Quote: TigerWu

Black Friday is a good day to get some of the streaming services really cheap last year I got Hulu, peacock and one other one for 99 cents a month for an entire year. I want to see what I can get this year. I think if I use a different email address and a different credit card they won't know that I already did it last year.
