Greetings!

Please forgive me if I make any technical mistakes in this post. I know very little about this kind of stuff.

I just wanted to let everyone know that the company that hosts our sites has been experiencing a DDOS attack, recently. What that is basically consists of users or pseudo-users (automated) flooding the websites hosted by the server in order to overload it and cause all of the sites on the server to be inaccessible due to the server being overloaded.

(I think that's right.)

Either way, the company that hosts us seems to be fairly ineffective at actually doing anything about this. Therefore, on Monday, I have been told that we will begin the search for a better host. Knowing the guys I work with here, I imagine that it will not take them long to find one.

Please know that this IS NOT an attack on WoV, WoO or any of our other sites specifically. It is a direct and intentional attack on the server, and by extension, the company that hosts us. There is no vendetta being executed against this family of websites.

Until this is resolved, upload speeds may be slow as Hell and can be expected to occasionally be until we find a new server, or the DDOS attack stop. Again, the company has proved very ineffective at stopping the attacks, so I'm guessing we'll find a new host first. We hope to have everything back up and running smoothly again as soon as possible.

And yet that means the ddos attackers win

In the future attacks against servers will result in their quickly paying ransoms rather than lose customers

Its a no win situation as woo and wov doesnt want to lose income. This is the responsibility of the server but they are under attack

They have chosen not to put security measures in place to stop or reduce the effectiveness of these attacks. Other hosting companies spend money to do this. They are now going to pay the price for trying to save money and providing poor customer service.

All hosts worth their weight will be able to defend against dDos attacks. You get what you pay for. Sometimes when the server farm hosts sites that are part of an attack other sites that are not their targets are also hit. A site like WoV/WoO should have better hosts.

This happened before a few months ago as well.

My interpretation of the timeouts and occasional error messages was that the site's back end mysql database had been left with too many waiting/hung connections. Possibly a hangover from a previous traffic flood. I don't know if the mysql server is separate from the http server, but I suggest that restarting mysqld might have been a quick fix. Anyhow, it seems to be working ok now.

This totally blows. Slot machinesforum was like this before it vanished. We all abandoned it with another site which was formed. I'm about ready to give up here, might be the last straw or the second to last.

hi WoV'ers

to give you all an update, we r moving away from DreamHost to Amazon servers in the next couple days. There is a fair share of things to do and We are in the process of preparing everything for the migration.

I apologoize for the downtime and site's lagging, we will do everything in our power to prevent this from happening again ( though these things are usually beyond our control ).

We had a pretty good hosting package on DH , but it is obvious they are not being able to fight such sacale of Ddos attacks ( the massive one is still ongoing )

Again our apologies and we will keep you posted

cheers
