Let me say that Dan was not a wealthy man. He and his wife lived in an apartment on the east side town that was by no means a wealthy area. It is in the area of the old Liberace museum. He did his best to make it with another hit casino game but lightning never did strike twice in Dan's case, although he still has some irons in the fire, including a game I developed with him. Lacking a dependable source of income there, he recently was forced back to work as a dealer, despite back problems that make it difficult for him to stand for long periods of time. Before returning to dealing, he opened a legitimate Thai massage parlor. Dan wasn't the type to sing the blues about money (like I am) but from what I've read between the lines, it has has not been doing well either. He kept asking me to pay it a visit and I never did.
Furthermore, I think he wore the same shirt every single time I saw him. Or maybe he just had lots of them that looked the same.
So, Dan's widow could definitely use some help to defray some of the expenses she is facing, not to mention the loss of Dan's income. She asked if I would lead a collection of Dan's friends that I'm able to reach. So, I am.
I'm flexible on the method of any donation. Paypal, check, cash, whatever. Feel free to include a personal note and I'll be sure to relay it. The official Mass for Dan is this Thursday but I'm not imposing that as a hard and fast deadline. However, it would be nice to have a gesture to make at the time. If you prefer to give more directly, I can help advise on how to do that.
Anyone interested, please PM me.
Thank you for your time.
Obviously, I'm going to participate. I hope to have something in the mail to you tomorrow so you get it in time to hand to her on Thursday.
But although I met her twice, and heard others mention her at the memorial service, what is Dan's wife's name/spelling?
Actually, what name should I put on the check, and is there a different name to put on the personal note that I'll include?
Thanks.
Mike, thanks for the PM with the mailing address.
I sent a donation yesterday and enclosed a personal note. While composing it, it occurred to me that I actually met Prapaisri at least 4 times. Very sweet lady.Quote: DJTeddyBear...although I met her twice,...

Ya know, guy, this post is just...tacky. Hits me really wrong. Don't tie one to the other. (Yes, I saw you said you'd do this the other day. I shrugged that one off. But here you are again, so...)
It's not cool to use this thread and this purpose to whine about a welch. I challenge you to make the contribution now.
BBB, I have to give you ++++.Quote: beachbumbabsYa know, guy, this post is just...tacky. Hits me really wrong. Don't tie one to the other. (Yes, I saw you said you'd do this the other day. I shrugged that one off. But here you are again, so...)

Maybe she skipped the middle man and paid off the debt owed to Dancer....
Was Dan involved in the bet? This is the first I've heard of a welch (I don't follow every thread), but knowing Dan's character, I know the answer to that question.
Therefore, why punish Dan's widow?
Either make a donation or STFU.
Quote: DJTeddyBearI totally agree with Babs on this. Actually, I think "Tacky" is an understatement.

Ditto.

I think I need to clarify; can't leave this inference out there. These are references to other threads and other off-the-board events.
WoN had bet the No with HotBlonde in her Challenge II weight loss thread. The decision point was her birthday in Mid-May. There has been no notice to the forum that the bet has been settled, though some acknowledgement that the No won. Dan was not a party to this bet.
WoN is tying his donation to a condition that he get this money from HB before he donates, implying/claiming that he's owed money that must be paid before he will follow through.
My read on this is it's public shaming intended to put peer pressure on HB from here, not in line or in spirit with the forum intent to help Dan's widow. So I called him out on it.

Ridiculous comment and you'd have been better off not commenting at all.

Quote: MaxPenI'm not really sure how one redeems them self from this sort of despicable action.
Confirmation from Dan's widow on receipt of at least $500 from WoN would go a long way towards redemption, but I don't think WoN has it in him.

Paying penance is BS in this case. There's a big difference between someone stealing a loaf of bread because they are starving and someone stealing to buy kiddie porn. My post was to point out the sacrilege of the guys action.
I can pay a fine to society for a speeding ticket. I can't simply pay a fine for running a red light and taking out a family of four in a crosswalk while intoxicated.
Four pedestrians aren't dead in this case. WoN needs to be a big boy here and make up for it and they way he does that in my opinion is by making a large donation to the cause & now. Dan's family needs some help and this community is an appropriate place to ask for it...let's keep the focus there.
WoN has opened his mouth loudly on the topic, so time to open the wallet just as wide!
I mean Dan was so Vehemently opposed to it.
It would be like someone, anti drugs accepting donations from a pot grower.
But what if such a donation were considered penance?

I don't think it's fair to speculate on someone's feelings when the subject of that discussion has passed.

Oh I agree. What's even worse is opening a thread asking APs to donate and keeping it open. Should of just made a statement that we are accepting money and closed the thread instead of leaving it open. Talk about tacky. However, I'm just as tacky posting this statement but it's like when someone calls you an a--hole. I mean honestly we are all just as bad as the other guy being a--holes and tacky to one another every day.

I disagree with you monet412. The thread that was set-up for donations to Dan's family may not have reached many members if opened and closed in a short amount of time. I have no doubt there are members out there still unaware of his passing. It is strictly up to the Administrator's discretion as to the timeliness of their request. Regarding this thread to donate, the word "tacky" should not be used. Poor choice of words by members using excuses as referenced before, perhaps. There is nothing "special" about AP's vs. non-AP's.

Who says the post was for AP's? The percentage is obviously a little higher here, but your about as likely to find Big Foot as a full time professional AP. Waaaaaaaay more talk about them than action. This forum is full on normal working people. Some knew Dan, most probably didn't other than from his postings.

Quote: billryanI don't believe I ever met Dan, but it seems obvious that he was friends with people that were APs.
Dan did not let philosophical or professional differences of opinion get in the way. He had strong opinions and was not afraid to voice them, but did not judge most people harshly or on any single issue, and was a friend to a wide circle of people.
Dan's name popped up today on my phone as the source of a text message.
Needless to say, I momentarily freaked out.
It was Dan's wife, thanking me for my donation, and for the letter I included. She invited me to the spa the next time I'm in town. I'll go, if for no other reason then to give her a hug and to share a tear.
So, if you meant to donate, but forgot, take care of that now, while this thread bump is still on your mind.
