Hi WoV'ers

so we have just introduced a new feature that shows your online status within forum posts/boards. It is a little green dot shown next to your avatar.

I don't want people to know I'm online,
I opted out of that in preferences years
ago.

What do you mean 'status'. The threads and
posts have always been there next to the
avatar. What does the green dot mean.

It's not showing any dot on mine, btw.

EB, it works differently for everyone else.
I think maybe you have preferential treatment, out of respect of course.
Last I looked, no green dot on me either.
I think I know the answer(s).
You'll get there, we'll wait on you..

Well, what I see is finally the text of a blocked member is blocked, but 2feathers is shown as last poster but his post isn't visible.

im thinking you have your online status set to hide under your preferences, hence why no green dot.

The online status means that you are currently active on the site

Yeah, if you've checked the "hide online status" box in preferences then it doesn't light up. As you can see, no green dot.

What purpose is the hide online status all about? Pure Paranoia?

Yep.

I never understood that option either.

Just speaking for myself, that is all I can do.
Recently went to preferences to choose the ''dark side'.
Didn't like it but while I was there I noticed the 'hide your online status' feature, or something like that.
So I picked it, just for fun. Was getting a little tired that when I looked it showed that there were usually just 5-15 members online, one of which was always me. Long, cumbersome name me. I had noticed that there were people posting that, according to the list, weren't online. Interesting. Was just a trial, pls remember I'm new here.

I will go back and change the preference again, back to the prior, and then the little dots will follow me around again, no doubt.

Someone said paranoia? It's not paranoia if there really is a silly little guy hiding in the bushes. If he disappears there will be 3 silly guys in the bushes tomorrow. 3 better armed, from one wrung up the ladder shall we say. Don't give them the finger, it just pisses them off. Then there's five... .

in chess sites, say, you might not want a game - hiding your status might be good. Here, why?

Got my green dot back, tried to explain green dot to Gj. If status is 'hidden' in preferences, you get no dot.
Here a dot, there a dot, not everywhere a dot, dot.

So boss man don't know you're wasting time arguing with folks on the intertron.
So people don't know what times you usually get on.
An odd, pleasurable feeling of surreptitiousness.
Freaking out new people.

That's all I got for now.

It's another element of internet anonymity that people like to have control over.
