Ok I was in the spelling bee; and regardless, I do not have spelling issues... just because I shorten words such as writing "wen" instead of when or "cuz" instead of because and so on ...
Don't criticize me WEN you don't even know me. Oops I meant WHEN

The reminder you got was pertaining to the rule about no free advertising. I suspect that was regarding the Miss Mint, although I'm not sure. I could've been something I'm not aware of, or a suspicion about the future.
Postings pics of yourself, your gambling, big wins, hotel rooms, your dog/cat, etc has always been allowed. If any pics contain personal advertising, consult Wiz first.
That seems more than reasonable to me.

It was just a joke. Anybody can be in a spelling bee. The hard part is winning.

Ouch :)

My point (in case it was too subtle -- it probably was) is that we all respect Axel around here. We know that he is a smart guy and a good gambler, even if he can't spell for shit.
So, even if Jennie couldn't spell, I don't see what the big deal would be. And, she makes a good point -- taking shortcuts when typing messages does not mean that someone can't spell. Give her a break.

I happen to completely agree with you. I was just trying to be cute......subtlety is clearly not my strong suit :)

That dose make sense
Interpret that as you will :)

I think is very common these days for the young folk to use lots of abbreviations and acronyms when writing anything on a smart phone. Personally, I only learned what LOL meant a few months ago, so don't ask me for any such translations.
LOL has at least three distinct meanings as an acronym. (laughing out loud, little old ladies, lots of luck).Quote: WizardI think is very common these days for the young folk to use lots of abbreviations and acronyms when writing anything on a smart phone. my mother started texting about 2 years ago. She would write LOL at the end of a lot of messages. Someone finally asked her why she was doing that and her answer was, "Because I like to say lots of love sometimes."

I'll show you next time.Quote: djatcI don't know how anyone can type a paragraph on a smartphone and not misspell a word.
NVM, I thought you said, and misspell a word.
You can't if you use automatic spelling correction. However, the "smart" phone may guess at correctly spelled words with hilarious results. One time my wife texted me to say our host had picked up our room as a comp, but the corrected text implied the host was in the room. I asked whether or not pistols at dawn would be required.Quote: djatcI don't know how anyone can type a paragraph on a smartphone and not misspell a word.

This could be great leverage for google backed phones. Apple's spellcheck is so bad that (more than once) my ipad has "corrected" the spelling I wanted, then Google has RE-corrected it before performing a search.
Quote: rudeboyoiI got 2nd place in the 5th grade spelling bee spelling "separate" wrong. I wonder if I would've gotten it right if they pronounced it as an adjective instead.
I got first in fifth grade and fourth in District (which does not advance to Regionals), I missed 'Hoedown,' never even so much as heard the word before, so I spelled it without the 'e.'

I've noticed that on televised spelling bees they always ask for the definition and etymology of a word, even if it seems obvious. Is this buying time or in the hopes that maybe something said in the answer will help?

Can you use hodown in a sentence please?
Quote: AxelWolfIs this a joke?
It was probably before the Hoedown Throwdown.

If the speller is not 100 percent sure of the spelling, it can help. Meanings can often give clues as to prefixes, suffixes, or other parts of the word. Same with the etymology.
The speller will ask for the definition and etymology if he is sure of the spelling, just to make sure that the word he is thinking of is the word they are asking.
Quote: AxelWolfIs this a joke?
No, and you can rest assured I was furious when I found out what the word actually meant!!! "That shouldn't f***ing be a word!!!" So, using the F word also got me grounded to my room for a week to add insult to injury. Negative reinforcement. I intentionally missed the first word of every spelling bee for the next two or three years, however long they did it.
Quote: WizardIt was probably before the Hoedown Throwdown.
She still uses some of those moves, just with much less clothing and many more penises :)
I looked for a way on my phone and found out I have to completely clear everything on the phone to do anything about it. If you don't have an option you can find to do it, I'm betting yours is the same. What I would do is just add the words you do use so they come up higher on the list and spelled correctly.Quote: AxelWolfI have something that pops up when a word is misspelled and asked if I want the spellchecker to add and remember it, occasionally I accidentally hit yes, then it will suggest that or auto correct it to that misspelled word. I have yet to fig out how to delete the misspelled words.
On a personal note about spelling, I believe my phone has completely undone everything I've learned about correct spelling. If the word I'm using isn't in the dictionary, I think I'm beginning to think many words aren't words when they are.
I do know what a hoedown is but it just seemed like a joke, especially forgetting the e, and in this thread to boot.Quote: WizardIt was probably before the Hoedown Throwdown.

I think that knowing the language of origin (greek, latin) might help. I'm not sure if they give that information in the etymology?
