I think it's a wonderful idea. We're not automatically enrolled on the new site right? I'll certainly visit but I may not join.

The computer craze was just getting geared up about
10 years ago. Thats when everybody started getting
them, the prices were coming down and the net was
popping up on TV and everywhere.

A lot of gamblers joined forums in the hopes of learning
how to win more than lose. This is what drove gambling
forums for years, that somebody had the secret and
was going to give it away on the internet. When people
started realizing that was never going to happen, the
forums started to dry up. The ones that are still around
are shadows of what they once were.

It isn't just the gambling forums, they all dried up a bit. Speaking for myself, I discovered USENET in 1991, and was hooked fast. Lots of people were by the late 1990s. But eventually you lose some interest. Like the CB Radio craze. It is all about communication with strangers being "neat" at first then "normal" then "too many jerks." There were many, many investment forums, people eventually lost interest.

The 1990-2007 Vegas Boom coincided with the golden age of the WWW. Now that going to a casino is no longer "exotic" interest has waned. I see the Wiz's idea here, and am glad a new forum will be coming instead of his tellling us "you don't have to go home, but you cannot stay here." WoV has been a "just right" size of not too small or too busy.

I wonder how much of the early growth was due to the mystique of forbidden fruit.

Vegas will always be Vegas to some degree, but there is no magic to be found inside most casinos.

I have seen my pastimes basically disappear over the years. Pool halls are closed or empty. Race tracks survive only as racinos.

And I wonder what effect on-line gambling will cause.

At G2E ,I stood in front of a giant screen TV, while wearing wrap around dark glasses.

It converted the TV image to 3d and a horse race was on. I could see the blades of grass thrown up from the horses hooves.

I have never seen such a vivid image, even from the infield at Pimlico or from the Ferris Wheel at Timonium Race track.

I hate OTB's but what choice do I have ?

Well, now I have to figure out whether discussing a different casino chip every day is a gambling topic, a Vegas topic, or neither. I assume there will be guidance in such things.

The result of having two sites is, instead of one moderately
busy site, there will be two moderately not busy sites. I
guess theres a point, but so far its evaded me. I just block
the threads I don't read and life goes on.

I am glad to hear that you have made this decision. I believe some of the discussions here have weakened your "Wizard of Odds" brand.

" Like the CB Radio craze." 10-4 good buddy.

Pagers were popular back then too. I had a scam selling fake pagers, because only doctors , lawyers, and high level business men had them. Hit a button on the fake ones I sold and 30 seconds later it would start beeping. You could then duck out to go look for a pay phone. LOL

Right now, all recent posts are a mixture, so top 10 can be anything. Two different recent posts boxes should also work. One gambling, and one, all other.

I'm somewhat privvy to this new concept. Mike asked me to do some sample banners, so I know the full name and tag line. (Don't try to pry the info out of me. It ain't happening.) Other than that, this is pretty much news to me too. Hell, I'm not even sure if he's using my banner, or someone else's. (Remember the revised banners I did for WoO?)

But now that I know more about it, I question the decision.

WoV tends to cultivate members that are gamblers, casino workers, game designers, advantage players, etc. While the discussions about casinos and gambling tend to be of a higher caliber than on other sites, what we say about non-gambling topics is also very interesting because we share a common interest in gambling.

Although we will all be the initial members, the new site will probably cultivate new members from a diverse cross-section, leading to a less specific point of view.

Today, there there is an over-kill of websites and forums for discussing almost any topic you like.
Will tomorrow be any different once DT is launched?

...actually, putting another recent posts box at the bottom of the page that includes everything, no one would see until they bother to scroll to the bottom of your page.

So, it would be all gambling for anyone coming to the page -- until they scroll to the bottom.
