I have been contemplating various house edge mechanisms for a couple games I am working on. I definitely have my own preferences but am curious of others opinions. Of course any house advantage is not desirable, but my question for you is from a player's perspective which do you mind the least? (I know it is situational based on what the player gets in return, but try to generalize...)

A big NO to commission on wins. It’s just a pain in the ass.

My wife refers to Pai Gow Poker as “that stupid game with the quarters.”
I invented a few casino games. Info: http://www.DaveMillerGaming.com/ ————————————————————————————————————— Superstitions are silly, childish, irrational rituals, born out of fear of the unknown. But how much does it cost to knock on wood? 😁

Completely agree, it is probably the only time I am annoyed when someone is giving me money.

Mr. zbrownson: Can you define HE "mechanisms" "you are working on"? The answers that followed your inquiry do not effect ones play or actual outcomes regarding winning or losing. Those answers seem to be pet peeves. Could you be more specific in what you are looking at?

Sure, I think what I am trying to figure out is whether players would rather pay a fee for a significant player advantage, or be forced to play a second matching bet with modified pay tables to make up for an advantage.

For example, lets use the switch hands blackjack variant from a few years back. A player pays a 20% fee for the right to switch his 2 dealt cards with 2 new cards from the deck. An alternative approach to this fee might be the player makes a matching second bet where most wins pay equal money, but if the dealer busts it only pays 1:2 and maybe blackjacks pay 2:1 to make it seem like a better deal (hypothetical as I am not sure if the math is in the ballpark on that, but you get the idea).

I am trying to gauge if players have a preference of one over the other, or see through both...

Mrzbrownson: Thanks for the fast response. I rarely play the normal card games such as 21 or baccarat, so I would have no knowledge of the described "mechanisms." I will say that certain "carnival" games such as 3 Card Poker at some casinos allow players to play just the bonus without playing the major portion of the game. I play the bonus or "Pair Plus" only, which means I am never playing against the House, so the dealer's hand vs mine is moot. For me, that is a "significant" player advantage even though the game itself favors the House a lot. It also makes my money go three times farther. That is pretty significant.
