Why have the graphics on video slots improved so dramatically while video poker still looks much the same as when it was invented?
Is it purely a matter of tradition? Would the possibility of greater appeal to new players be outweighed by the cost?

I'm guessing here, but I would say the useful life of a VP machine is far greater than a slot. The games haven't changed much in 20 years, so no need to change out the program.
Slots seem to be always advancing, so the latest technology gets implemented faster.

Companies have tried making "fancier" video poker games but the players seem to always defer back to the traditional games.
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

Neophytes probably don't gravitate to Video Poker so there is little incentive to capture new players. Why make cosmetic changes that cost time and money but seem to offer no increase in revenue.

It's a card game. I just want to see pictures of cards, nothing more, not even different fonts.

Around the mid-2000s, there was a video poker game with a large, vertical monitor showing floating hands that dealt you cards onto a green table, but it was the same video poker, if I recall correctly. Even before I knew about user interface, I felt like it was too slow. The tried-and-true look and feel still works best!

There are many old looking Slot graphics too. ;) Treasures Of Troy looks like it was made in 1970. Coyote Moon looks 1980. :)

I still play "old-school" 3 reel slot machines, with five lines. I prefer the ones with lights in them, but it's not a deal killer. One time I won $5,000 at a $1x5 lines plain double diamond. All video slot machines are off limits to me. I got tired of losing money playing lame video games with no skill.

I wish they would design vp games with more flexibility, so someone who usually plays slots can enjoy fun graphical elements, but someone who just wants to play poker can press a turbo button to turn all that stuff off.

That's actually a really good idea. Nice feature for them to add and freshen up some games.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

Yeah, right now on teh standard machines, they have the three speed settings for dealing the cards. They could change it to an animation setting.. "slow" becomes full animation, "medium" has some animation, "fast" has no animation.
I like that concept....

Would any of the changes suggested increase play time and/or attract new players? Doubtful.
They do keep coming up with new types of poker requiring new programming, so why can’t they update the graphics at the same time?
At one time, the big thing in VP was 3-play. Then 5-play, 10-play, 50-play and finally 100-play. Today, you’re lucky to find a 5-play machine. Why is that? Figure out that answer and maybe you’ll also figure out why the nicer graphics machines mentioned in this thread are gone...
