9/6 JoB

Wiz's hand analyzer: https://wizardofodds.com/games/video-poker/hand-analyzer/

dealt: 3c 7s 8d 9s Js

holding (79J)s = .53 ev
holding just the J = .47 ev

i've always counted gaps/penalty cards as -1, and high cards as +1.

so 79j = 2 gaps = -2
8 = penalty card = -1
J = high card = +1
count = -2

from the Wiz's strategy sheet, pick the high card when 3SF = -2

I didn't give up much EV by doing this mistake and picking the high card.
but when you do 5000 hands in a day, it adds up. :(
doh!

I use Wolf Video Poker almost exclusively. Just one of the functions I like is I get two strategies for a game, the Penalty Strategy and the Basic Strategy. Here is the difference between the two with FPDW:

Penalty Strategy...........100.761961%
Basic Strategy..............100.757685%

Should I concern myself with penalty situations in FPDW? I don't think so. The difference between the two strategies is so razor thin that I would rather keep my speed up than bother with penalty situations.

With some games the difference is significant so I go with the penalty strategy.

Here is the payback for 9/6 Jacks, both Penalty Strategy and Basic Strategy:

Penalty Strategy.....99.543904
Basic Strategy........99.542934

Bob Dancer used to rail on Dan Paymar for publishing the Basic Strategy to the game and all the big time money that people would be losing if they used Paymar's strategy. But as you can see, there is hardly any difference in payback between the two strategies.
