Actually I think it is $ 2.50 per point for slotsQuote: JohnnyQI dabbled in the slots for a little bit. I started out just wanting to confirm how many $’s it takes to get a point on the slots. $ 3 I think
So I am going today to check it out. It is a nice mild day temperature-wise, much nicer than Tues & Wedn.
This is not “THE” day of the big race, so I am standing along the rail. I can sit now while I watch my neighbors stuff - they are also from the ship and they brought folding camping chairs.
I don’t think I brought any Aussie $’s to the track, so I guess no betting for me ! ;-)
So I did make a $10 wager. And promptly lost it. So that’s $ 6.41 USD I won’t see again. BUT a good souvenir betting slip.
Just a couple of race fans trying to blend in and not call attention to themselves:
Actually, they were very pleasant.
We are back to an ocean view cabin. We prefer a balcony but sometimes the cost to upgrade is a bit steep. Sometimes we just take what the casino Offer offers.
I like this ship better already than the Carnival one we had been on for the past couple of weeks. And yep, I brought my paddle, even though there are always some loaners available from the ship.
The casino is a little smaller, but I don’t think it will be very busy on most days.
We did this observation platform yesterday:
If you look closely, you can see our last cruise ship between the buildings:
On Celebrity's newest ships (E-class), when i'm offered an Aqua balcony (includes spa), i downgrade to an aft balcony.Quote: PokerGrinderThat’s funny I actually choose interior rooms even when I have comped ocean or balcony rooms because I love the pure darkness at night to sleep.

1) E-class balconies aren't real balconies in my view. They are fancy OV with windows that slide down.
2) i Don't care about the spa
3) Aft balconies are real balconies and they're usually huge
Quote: PokerGrinderI’ve never had a balcony but actually decided to do the balcony for Australia in February. I figured the views would be worth it.

Is that to New Zealand ?

I was once on a Holland America ship in an interior cabin when the ship had an issue and the power went out. I was the darkest and most difficult to navigate ship while the power was out. It was so dark that passengers could not even find their cabins even during the day. There was no emergency lighting so it was pitch black. They would have crew with flashlights walk you and help you find your cabins. The power was out for just over 24 hours. This was before everyone had phones with flashlights on them.

Fiji and Vanuatu
I used to be in your camp, but these days, some ambient light vs total darkness doesn't bother me as much as it used to.Quote: PokerGrinderThat’s funny I actually choose interior rooms even when I have comped ocean or balcony rooms because I love the pure darkness at night to sleep.

I don't mind an interior cabin -- pretty much all I use the cabin for is to sleep (though if I have a balcony, I will spend some time out there). But during Covid when they started quarantining people in their cabins, I couldn't imagine being cooped up in a room with no windows for the length of the cruise.
Quick story: my first cruise (other than a day cruise) was with my family when I was 16 and my sister was 20. Mom & Dad had an ocean view cabin, but we had an interior cabin. The first night, we were awakened from a dead sleep by a phone call. It was our Mom. We asked why she was calling, waking us up in the middle of the night! She said, it's 9 AM and we were wondering why you didn't meet us for breakfast!
Man, I wish I could sleep like that again!
I like the ship itself. Nice dining room, very good food at lunch including sushi on the first couple days, interesting antiques, good theatre, and a pickleball court in the “sports court” on deck 11.
I don’t like the casino.
- The VP is worse than any other cruise ship I have been on.
a) JoB is 6/5 but the RF BONUS is at 10 coins, not 5.
b) The Decent version of 6/5 Bonus Poker is AWOL.
c) No ULT X VP.
- The slot machine selection is not good.
- I may try the FUN 21 sometime. 3/2 blackjack, $ 6 US minimum.
Yep, besides the tight payback, now a RF is gonna come along with a 1099Quote: PokerGrinderAmazing that they took the worst VP and managed to make it worse with the 10 coin rf
I've seen this on some Carnival ships, too.Quote: PokerGrinderAmazing that they took the worst VP and managed to make it worse with the 10 coin rf

I know that ship gambling isn’t as popular with the Aussies as it is with a typical cross-section of US cruisers, but the casino was practically DESERTED last nite.
On a slight positive note, I called Holland-America this morning and they confirmed we get $ 50 free play per person. So wish me luck convincing the casino staff of that. And how is it that there is a disconnect communicating/documenting the perks when a cruise is booked (in this case, booked almost a year ago) and when you actually get on the ship ???
On a slight negative note, we do NOT have free drinks while playing in the casino on this one.
We were up on deck 9, so we may have felt it more than others. It was enough that a couple dozen bowls slid off a counter and broke on the floor at the buffet.
I wanted to rotate this picture, but my IPhone didn’t want to:
Yesterday was “scenic cruising” in the fjords of southwestern New Zealand.
Even after we were back at sea yesterday, the casino didn’t open. I assume it was because if we had gotten further from the coast, the seas might have been too rough (???).
Pix aren’t loading, I will look at that later as well.
So we had dinner in the dining room (just ok this time) and went to the show, an accordionist - believe it or not, and it was in fact very entertaining.
Then we watched the original KINGSMEN movie in our cabin, and called it a night without going to the CASINO.
Annie Gong:
Didn’t know much about the early flying efforts of James Pearce (well actually I still don’t):
The city had a very inexpensive tour bus and besides the museum, there was a stop at a Botanical Garden:
One of the folks we met back in Norway on the ship was here on vacation, so we were able to meet up and hang out.
Small world !
We purchased our tickets for the cable car already, but plan to do that on the walk back to the shuttle bus stop.
And why would only poodles not be allowed on the escalator ? Because they are French ?
We’re back on board now. Half price happy hour is an hour from now.
Painting crew:
The casino doesn’t open until 10:15 tonight, I think I will probably wait until tomorrow to play anymore FUN 21.
Overall, the entertainment in the main theatre has been pretty good. But this one sounds a bit lame:
- but certainly better than some of the filler that ends up on the stage on a Carnival cruise.
Not a long port stop today, the last shuttle bus from town was 12:30 pm.
We rented e-bikes, which was fun.
Tonight’s dining room menu:
The casino wasn’t open a lot the past couple days, and we didn’t go when it was open. Mrs Q was over her loss budget. I lost on this cruise too, but not as much.
We got to watch the whole game before disembarking:
Yesterday afternoon:
"Waiter, I would like one of everything."Quote: JohnnyQAlso, HAPPY THANKSGIVING. Due to the international dateline, it is Thursday here.
Tonight’s dining room menu:

"Sir that's a massive amount of food, are you sure?"
"It ain't Thanksgiving without feeling overly stuffed at the end of the night!"
For a good portion of the cruise, I cut way back on carbs to try and “maintain not gain” weight. No bread, and just decaf for dessert.
But scales on-board were not common, and if you did find one, the digital readings fluctuated a lot even when the waves weren’t very high. I’ll check when I get back to the US. I don’t think I gained too much, but probably some.
Downtown Auckland:
World’s skinniest high rise hotel ? Ibis Budget:
Right next to the SKY TOWER was the SKY CASINO, so we decided to check it out too (and also take a restroom break).
It was nice inside, lots and lots of slots, but no video poker as far as I could see……
I decided to get a souvenir players club card, and then so did Mrs Q. It came with $ 10 NZ in fee slot play, which is only $ 6 USD.
We played a few spins on some slots, then went over to the “stadium” blackjack, and cashed out with enough for a small discount on the Tower tickets.
We are in an airport club lounge right now, waiting for our 12 hour flight to get to the west coast. Mrs Q said there was a young guy loading free beers into his backpack.
- What the heck ???
The host had to have security talk with him. Sorry, no picture on that.
You didn't do the controlled bungee jump off the Tower? Not much more if if paid for the tickets to go up anyway :)Quote: JohnnyQWe played a few spins on some slots, then went over to the “stadium” blackjack, and cashed out with enough for a small discount on the Tower tickets.

Uh, we had to get to the airport so we were short of time ???Quote: 100xOddsYou didn't do the controlled bungee jump off the Tower? Not much more if if paid for the tickets to go up anyway :)
OK, so on my next trip to Auckland { tbd } we should meet up, do the tower fall, visit the casino, and post about it ?
And inexpensive too for downtown accommodations.Quote: ChallengedMillyI'm an architect snob but lowkey that super skinny building is actually kind of cool looking.
I used IHG reward points for my stay at the Holiday Inn Express.

unfortunately, if going though 3rd party, you dont get points at holiday inn. :(
I watched most of the 3rd season of Barry from HBO. Very interesting, as expected, but a bit “out there”.
Heading into San Fran:
We will finish visiting here tomorrow and fly the rest of the way home. Woot woot.
We have some more casino discount cruises booked for early next year, but will have to sort out how long we want to be away from home again, first.
So, STAY TUNED……
Quote: JohnnyQWe had lots of movies to pick from on the flight, I tried to sleep from time to time but didn’t get a lot of rest.

You guys think you’ll remember how to cook a meal?!?
Keep up the good posting!
Haha, hopefully. We have always gone out to eat fairly frequently anyway, but I think eating at home more, now that Mrs Q doesn't have a hectic work schedule, will be easier and be more healthy too.Quote: SOOPOOYou guys think you’ll remember how to cook a meal?!?
After getting back from the month of cruises in Europe, I would say things to Mrs. Q like, "Hey, that napkin isn't going to put itself on my lap".
Looking ahead.....
We are still getting deep discount cruise offers from Carnival, but not as much as we used to from Holland-America.
- We would prefer to cruise on H-A vs Carny.
- But we would ALSO prefer to have a deep CASINO discount (!), so that is part of the equation.
The stuff we already have booked in 2024 is on both H-A and Carnival. It is around 100 days worth in total. But making arrangements to be gone that long again might be more involved the second time around, and it would be nice to be home for a while rather than heading right back out in early January.
So we might cancel one or two, but still do some cruises. One of the itineraries sails by Antartica, and we still definitely want to see that.
