We arrived on Friday afternoon and drove from the airport to The Roadhouse, making a slight detour to drive by Graceland. The Roadhouse seems to suffer from an identity crisis. It was originally the Sheraton, and on the outside, still has what I would call "Bavarian Castle" type architecture. However, on the inside, true to its name, it looks like the Double Deuce. And once you pass the lobby into the hotel part, it looks like a Fairfield Inn. The rooms themselves look like a typical chain hotel room, but with a jacuzzi tub, and large bathroom.
We put our stuff in the room and headed over to the Horseshoe to find their Diamond Lounge. The lounge was nice, and they had some music memorabilia on the walls. However, service was slow. I had to go to the bar a couple of times to get my drinks. I think they only had one waitress for the entire room. They had fruits & veggies, chips & dip, and a few desserts set out. Not too impressive, but about 30 minutes after we arrived, they brought out chicken fingers.
Afterwards, we took a quick look around the Horseshoe and headed back to the Roadhouse. The Roadhouse casino is pretty small. They have maybe a half dozen BJ tables (All 6 to 5, except for one $15 min table), 3 craps tables (one was Crapless), a 3CP table and a MS Stud table. There is no high limit area in the Roadhouse.
They had a fair amount of slots and VP. But there, against the back wall, we found the "white unicorn" -- a CET 9/6 JoB machine (a progressive, no less) that gives 1 TC per $10 coin-in! They actually have two of these machines. They are 1c x 100 coin, which (after spending way too much time figuring it out) I determined is the equivalent of a standard 20c (5-coin) machine.
I saw two different people hit royals on these machines over the weekend. Even though the jackpot was < $1000 both times, it still required a hand pay. I also noted that these machines are very popular. There was always someone at one or both of the machines! I did get to play it a couple of times, though. It usually treated me kindly.
Unfortunately, the $1 VP machines treated me like an ATM! Friday, I lost from the word "Go." They had a 9/6 DDB progressive that was at $4700. However, I only lasted a few minutes with the couple hundred I put in.
Up Next: Saturday in Memphis
After drinks at the Peabody, we went to go on a tour I had booked with a company called Rockabilly Rides as a surprise for Mrs. Joeman. It's a small tour company (actually, it's just 2 guys), and they give personalized tours of the city in old restored cars. I had originally booked the 1959 Ford Skyliner,
but it was in the shop. So we got to ride in the 1955 Plymouth Belvedere.
Mrs. Joeman loves old cars, so she was very excited when our tour guide (Brad) pulled up in the Belvedere. Brad was very friendly and knowledgeable. We drove all over downtown as Brad pointed out Memphis' most historically, culturally, and musically significant sites. We both thoroughly enjoyed the tour and would highly recommend it for anyone visiting Memphis or Tunica.
Up Next: Back to Tunica
I played a little more VP and resumed the beating that the variance gods were handing out that weekend. "Thank you sir, may I have another?" We decided to trek over to the Horseshoe to see if our luck would be any better over there. With the exception of an hour of BJ, it hadn't. :P
BJ at the Horseshoe was a head scratcher. Saturday night, it was fairly crowded, and I walked passed full table after full table of 6:5. Walking over to another pit, I found a $5 3:2 shoe game with nobody playing!! So, I sat down to play a few hands, and actually won a few dollars!
While we were playing, we could see that there was some sort of issue at the front entrance to the casino. Evidently, they had a pipe burst right above the entrance and water was cascading down the glass doors. Mrs. Joeman looked over and said, "I didn't know they had a fountain in the lobby." The dealer said, "Hmm, we're not supposed to!" The problem continued for at least an hour. They had one employee who was continuously squeegeeing the water out the front doors so that it wouldn't flow into the casino.
After that, we headed back to the Roadhouse. Mrs. Joeman headed up to the room, and I tried another crack at the $1 VP. Unfortunately, another thrashing was in store for me, and I lost another chunk in record time. I finally had to admit defeat and head back upstairs.
One amusing thing happened on Saturday night. The walls of the hotel room are pretty thin, and we were able to overhear the couple next door. Evidently, the guy came back to the room late, drunk, broke, or possibly a combination of the three, and the woman was NOT happy about it. The man was mumbling, so we couldn't exactly make out what he was saying, but the woman was screaming at him loud and clear! Our favorite part of the exchange was the following:
Man: *Mumble, mumble, mumble*
Woman: "NO, I DON'T WANT TO F***ING CUDDLE!!"
Up next: Low Rolling on Sunday
We didn't do any gambling at the Fitz, but we did notice something that made us do a double-take. Upon passing the VP bar, we noticed that the TVs in the bar were tuned to some Sunday morning gospel service show. We thought it was comically odd that here was a place that you could drink and gamble while watching the Gospel Prayer Hour! However, we didn't see anybody taking advantage of this unique juxtaposition of virtue and vice!
Since the RiverPark was closed, we instead headed for Mhoon Landing Park, another park on the banks of the Mississippi a few miles downstream. Originally, we had planned to have a picnic there, but since it was such a dreary day, we decided to do just a quick visit. We stayed for a few minutes to watch the barge traffic in the frigid mists.
Afterwards, we decided to visit Resorts. Along our route to the park, We had seen a sign for $25 free play for $10 coin-in for new members. We verified the details of the offer and got shiny new player's cards. I was able to turn my $10 into $17 while Mrs. Joeman turned hers into $20. Woot!
At noon, we headed back to the Roadhouse in search of the Jaguars/Broncos game. I figured it would be a tough find. Neither the Roadhouse nor the Horseshoe had any kind of NFL package, so they were only showing the games on the local networks. C'mon, CET, how hard would be to spring for Sunday Ticket? I think the Roadhouse is really missing a bet here. Between their two bars, they probably have 20 nice-sized TV's. If they advertised that they had all the games, I bet they would get quite a few takers for NFL Sundays.
The bartender suggested that the Gold Strike might have the game on, so we headed over there. We found a small wine bar tucked in the back corner of the casino that had 2 TV's. Wouldn't you know, one of them actually had the Jags game! So, we settled down on one of the couches in the back and watched the Jags bungle away another winnable game, and then went to lunch.
We had a MyVegas 2-for-1 buffet for the GS, but when we went to redeem it, they actually put $28 in comps on the card. This turned out to be a deal since the buffet was only $21, making our 2-for-1 actually more like a 2-for-3/4. The buffet did not have that big of a selection, but what they had was pretty good. Plus, they had possibly the best casino buffet desserts I have ever had. I tried a few, and they were all fresh and tasty.
After lunch, we went back to the bar and watched the late games. This time we sat at the bar and short-coined some VP so we could have a few drinks while watching the game. Fortunately drink rationing has not made it to the MS casinos, yet! We actually did quite well with the VP. Mrs. Joeman hit a few nice hands along the way:
In the end, she cashed out ahead $20, and I made $10! Woot! :)
We wandered back to the Roadhouse and noticed that they had turned one of their bars into an impromptu Diamond Lounge. Evidently, they do this on weekend evenings, and we decided to take advantage. The food was about the same as the Horseshoe, but I liked the atmosphere at the Roadhouse better. It was not as crowded and had comfier seats and couches. We had a few drinks, a few snacks, and watched SNF before calling it a night.
Next up: A chance for redemption?
Awesome! That put me about even for the trip.
We enjoyed Tunica/Memphis and would go again. Hopefully, Allegiant will renew their JAX-MEM route.
It's been.my experience that Allegiant is more seasonal.than most, changing their offerings 2-3 x per year, maybe more. I suspect your route will return in late spring if it was ever profitable to begin with (no idea on that) . I used to work them in and out of Sanford (Orlando ) and saw their city pairs change a lot. You might even write them, tell them you used and appreciated the JAX-MEM route, and would use them again if they restored it. They're small enough to be responsive to that.
Roadhouse was also offering ten Lfyt trips due to some sort of promotional tie-in.
You had all that travel and adventure and food and drink and "pretty much came back even".. That is good.
Thanks, Babs. I'm glad that there may be hope of the route (not to mention JAX-MSY, which we took twice earlier in the year, that has also disappeared) returning in the future. I actually did email them through their website a few weeks back regarding this very subject, but haven't heard back yet.Quote: beachbumbabsGreat report, Joeman,.with all the details and pictures. Thanks!

I went there around 1993 or so.
There were 3 or 4 casinos all within walking distance.
Ballys, splash, and I can't remember the names of the others.
Don't expect anyone to give heads up for non-Vegas trips on here, but...yeah...we were there that weekend starting Saturday night. I wasn't the drunk guy stumbling in the room that night at least...we didn't move to Roadhouse til Sunday. ;) Nice report and nice comeback win!
I kept the good times rolling after you left though...this was my Monday night there, another comeback win story...
First go to the Horseshoe because they had a 10X slot/5X VP multiplier. This trip had been mostly down until that day and I was still down $50. Belly up to the poker room bar and notice my craft beer taps are all disconnected. Asked the bartender where they went and he said they removed the tanks two months ago and never replaced them. Doh.
So I settle in with a Budweiser and start playing. Play 8/5 JoB (97.30%) as it's the best quarter choice. Hold my own, but get jealous of the guy 3 down from me as he was playing 8/5 DDB (of course) and hit 4 Aces for $200. I think to myself, "I want 4 Aces, but I know DDB is worse so..." But I soon realize that their dollar game is 9/6 (98.98%). I don't want to bet max, but betting one still pays back better than any quarter choice (97.83%), so I figure why not?
At first that was a mistake. I was now over $20 in the hole and I am getting a little bored. But I soon get a pair of Aces with a straight flush draw, and ask the bartender to tell me when to hit it. He obliged.
Not exactly what I wanted, but it was a start, and seemed to set the timing for that 2 hour window.
Two minutes later I was a lot happier I switched to DDB.
Cash out after that up $60 and find my gf to show her my good fortune. She also turned it around there a bit with an 8X full house for 320 nickels. We walk over to Tunica Roadhouse where we were staying, my favorite place to play, and historically unluckiest. Doh!
She goes up to the room to drop off our coats while I head to the bar for another beer. Same paytables as Shoe, so I stuck with what worked. I got paid off in minutes this time.
Play one more hand, cash out, now up $76 more!
Now with beer in hand, I finally went toward the Double STP machines that I was hoping to focus more on over the weekend (didn't touch them Sat/Sun). Before that though, took these pics out of superstition. I often read the game stats on WMS machines if the option appears on the main screen.
This was noteworthy because no one had hit a Bierhaus bonus in 2 days! Tunica is slow folks. :(
It ended up being a good timing reset.
Within 10 minutes, I hit this.
Then about another 15 minutes later. Another straight flush!
For the next ~hour, no huge hits, but I seem to make every draw. Next to me I'm chatting with the guy next to me, and I'm trying to give him some of my luck as he's playing 3 line quarters! Both of us have been dumbfounded by how often I'm filling in draws. Along the way we talk about various casinos and other things. When it came to STP, he said his biggest hit was a dealt 5X royal for $15k. Eventually I had to go to the bathroom (damn beer), and when I get back I see him nearly bust on his last $100 on the night. :(
He does goes bust but he's still chatting with me about Vegas VP and watching me for a bit. A few moments later I get KQJT of clubs. I look over at his machine, see a random Ace of clubs on it, point to it and say, "You're gonna be pissed if I get one of these." Then I hit draw.
"Holy ****!" I couldn't believe it! And he couldn't either! 3 Straight Flushes (one Royal) within an hour! And my last two royals, in back to back Tunica trips, followed a straight flush before a quad!!! He was a terribly a good sport about it and congratulated me. My gf gave up on those machines awhile back, but still was in the area, so she heard me going nuts and came back over.
I cashed this out soon after.
8th royal, 4th in Tunica (3 of those in the last 15 months). And royals in back-to-back Tunica trips! Wow!
I wish I would have quit then, but I never quit after a royal. The hit machine mostly shut off. And I think I bled about $70 back in the next 3 hours. I was close to hitting two royals in one day though at times.
And this would have been a $250 kick in the nuts with my second KQJT draw of the night, but I would have still taken it.
But still came out over $200 ahead for the trip, I'll take that every time!
If I stay away from there, it is the one destination where I actually am a winner by a large margin. I doubt it will stay that way forever, but Tunica is out of the way enough from here that we won't go often...
Tring, are you suggesting that we need a "Post your Tunica Dates" thread here? :)Quote: tringlomane...
Glad you had a good trip and you came out ahead. Sorry they made you drink Budwiser! ;)
Quote: FleaStiffIts been quite a while for me, but I suggest that anyone going to Tunica learn to 'be a squeaky wheel' and ask for comps and also be sure to check the Twitter Feed as well as the individual casino's calendars for last minute promos.
Tunica seemed pretty generous with food comps when we were there. I don't think we paid for any food and we are not high- or even mid-rollers...ASK...be polite, they'll be polite and maybe you will get something.
