My next game from the Table Game Protection and Table Games Conference is Burn One 21.

Direct: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6I20LpsMIoA

Sorry this one is blurry. If anyone is interested in being my videographer at such events, please let me know.

This one is blackjack with these twists:

1. Player may pay a 10% fee to burn a card with a total of 12 to 16.
2. Automatic push if the dealer has 16.
3. Player blackjack is an automatic winner and pays 3-2.

The question for the poll is would you play Burn One 21?

The player chooses the card? For example 10-2, the player keeps his 10

Or is there some rule about which card gets burned.

At some of the casino Blackjack tournaments the player has the option to give up any 1 of the first 3 cards, meaning, you get an ace and a 2, if you like, give up the 2, replace it with another card. You get a hard 16 (face and a 6 for example), give up the 6 get another card. Or you get that hard 16 (face and a 6), your third card busts you, so you replace it.

But, you may do this only once per hand and it costs $500. real dollars for each "Mulligan" in an otherwise free entry tournament.***

The rule appears to be described here
https://wizardofvegas.com/forum/questions-and-answers/gambling/6771-optimal-use-of-a-mulligan-in-tournament-blackjack/

There is also some kind of restriction on how many times you may do this per round. I didn't inquire very closely into the exact restrictions on this "Mulligan" rule because I never did it.

*** The tournament in which I played where this was allowed was a $1,000,000. winner takes all with under a few hundred participants.

In the first round where I played, I advanced without doing a Mulligan and the two players at my table who paid for Mulligans did not advance anyway. I did not make it past the second round.

The player may choose. For example, with 10-2, the player would obviously burn the 2. The player may use it at any point too, including with more than two cards or after a split/double.

Well besides the 10% fee, this is the problem of course.

Automatic push if the dealer has 16.

There are mainly two directions among these many blackjack variants, push 22 and push 16. I feel this Burn One 21 is a lot more complicated than other similar games. Besides the main game, there are also two side bets, the Burn bet and the Push bet. It is still not clear whether these two side bets are optional or mandatary, but these bets will slow down the gaming progress a lot.

I don't play BJ, but maybe I should at least try and learn basic strategy so if I find a 3:2 game I stand half a chance.

That being said, I applaud the inventiveness of these game creators to create new and interesting wrinkles on an old game, especially ones that can keep the HE below 1 percent.

Neither of the side bets are mandatory. However, if the player doesn’t pre-pay the 10% Burn One fee, he wouldn’t be able to burn one of his cards when dealt a stiff hand. Additionally, it wouldn’t be wise to NOT pay the fee because he would be playing a BJ game with a 5.1% house edge due to the dealer pushing on any total of 16. Lastly, while collecting additional wagers may partially slow down a game, the house may view still view this as being worth it as 57% of the time they will be collecting 10% of the player’s wager without them even getting a hand that qualifies to burn one.
