I had a couple ideas for pai gow poker- one that would been a reguler table game and the other a traditional poker style game.

the first one for a reguler alternative table game- would be a sort of pai gow press. the player would set out three equel bets- one for the 5-card hand and one for the 2-card hand and a 3rd that was a press bet. He would then be delt 7 cards as usual (there is also the optional bonus side/sucker bet thats traditionally seen)- arrange the 7-cards as he felt best and then he would ask for the press chips to be added to the 5-card bet or the 2-card bet- whichever he prefered. the dealer would show his cards and arrange them the house way and the player would be paid on the bet he wins-- with the two bets independant of each other 5-card vs 5-card and 2-card vs 2-card. all traditional pai gow rules apply such as copies to house and 5-card must outrank 2-card ect. I dont think this game would change the advantage too hard for the player/against the house. but it would definatly effect strategy.
---------------------------------------------------

the other- Id like to see pai gow used as a reguler poker game w/ a table of up to 7 players. it would be an evenly split pot simuler as hi/low games. one half for the 2-card hand and one half for the 5-card hand. the dealer could toss out two cards- a round of betting- three more cards- a round of betting- the final two cards and a final round of betting. Id love to play this game as a reguler poker game.
--------------------------------

lookin to see what yall's ideas are on either.

I like that first idea. However, the press bet would be powerful in the player's favor, I think. You would need to take something away from the player to pay for it. I like Dan's idea of a qualifying dealer hand, but he has a claim on that. Maybe mandating the player make a lousy side bet if he makes the press bet.

What if you could only win on one of the two hands- if you won on both then the hand you did not press pushes instead of getting paid?

What if the pressed bet was paid according to hard it was to win? Press 4-2 and win? Get paid 10000:1. Press A-A and win? Here is $1. None of the payouts would be quite at fair odds, so the player advantage associated with the press decision could be mitigated.

I could see that one of two ways. Youd either need to group it so its easy to read for both the 5-card hand and the 2-card hand as such: (pure example)

Q-high or less = 2 to 1
K-high to 2-2 = 3 to 2
3-3 to 9-9 = 1 to 1
10-10 to A-A 2 to 3

and on the 5-card hand something like

pair or less = 2 to 1
ToK or 2pair = 3 to 2
straight/flush = 1 to 1
fullhouse+ = 2 to 3

and the non-pressed bet if wins gets 1:1 automaticly.

---------------------

OR how would it be if the non-press gets 1:1 and the pressed gets 2:3 payoff?

$60-$60 2-card pressed to make $60-$120 = total bet of $180 win both get +$140 (round down on odd hands)

The latter has promise with a bet of 5 units on the 5-card hand, and 2 units for the 2-card hand. Considering most modern Casino games, the wager would have to be a $5 base for a $35 total per hand. plus a $1 commission (2.78%). I suppose $2 is doable with 50c vig (3.44%). The latter chases a $98 pot, the former $245. Nontheless, the vig is the problem, as PGP is usually $20 + $1 on a win for a 2.73% vig. Now if you could offer PGP with a 2.0 House Advantage ($1 per $25), you would have something. OTOH, chasing a fair-sized pot like $245 (6 to 1) ain't too bad an idea.
Some people need to reimagine their thinking.
