Wizard, I was reviewing your Craps FAQ because I was looking for a side bet that I saw last month in Indiana, and I saw this:
First, it sounds like the dealer was saying to avoid the bet, so he was right. However, maybe he wasn't... when I saw the bet (called "Hi-Lo Dice" I believe), it paid 5 to 1 on either the 2 or the 12.
Roll...Pays...Odds...Return
2_______5____.028____.139
3-6_____1____.389____.389
7-12___-1____.583___-.583
HOUSE EDGE .0555555555555
(one day I'll learn to make tables...)
It appears to be the same as the cruddy field.
Quote:Last night I was at a casino in Louisiana and after playing for a while I noticed that the Big 6/8 bet was replaced with an Over/Under 7 for one roll bet. The crew member said it was new and paid even money. He then mentioned that he thought the field was a better bet. Was he right?
No! The probability of winning is 15/36 = 41.67%, for a house edge of 16.67%. Even if the 2 and 12 both pay 2 to 1 on the field the house edge is only 5.56%. The over/under 7 bet ties for the any 7 bet as the worst bets on the table. April 3, 2005

This bet can also be found downtown Vegas at the Golden Gate.

I've seen that corner used for other bets as well. The only other one that comes to mind is 6-7-8 pays even money, while hard 6 and 8 pays 2:1.
This also has a 5.555% edge.
By contrast, a typical field bet has a 2.777% edge. Typical is 2 pays 2:1, 12 pays 3:1 or vice versa. Some stingy casinos pay 2:1 on both, making it the same 5.555% edge.
Bottom line: Avoid that corner.

I spotted the Under/Over 7 bet at the craps tables at New York, New York. Pays even money if the next roll wins, otherwise the bet loses. The probability of winning is 15/36=41.67% and the house edge is 16.67%

Talk about carnival bets, that was literally a bet at the street fair when I was a kid. Of course, the operator handled the big dice, if you saw a lot of action on one side, take the other. Not a system at the street fair, just a fact.

I believe a 17% edge on a coin flip is noticeable by the average bettor quite quickly. Were you able to observe anybody playing it?
