Is there a way to bet odds on the 4 and 10 and you service them yourselves on the passline. I recall someone doing something similar to this last time I was in Vegas. They could put them up and down whenever they wanted and paid out 2 to 1 just like a buy.

If there is a point and you are not on the pass line with a bet, you can put money on the outside of the pass line, and it is counted as a PLACE bet ,so it would pay 9:5 if a 4 or 10 was the point. Is that possibly what you saw?
Always borrow money from a pessimist; They don't expect to get paid back ! Be yourself and speak your thoughts. Those who matter won't mind, and those that mind, don't matter!

Hmmm...all "odds" as in free odds in addition to your pass line bet are "self service"; you can put them yourself and add to them or take them away at any time, and they pay 2:1 if the point is 4 or 10. If you mean something specific for a 4 and a 10 that you can do yourself when either of those numbers are NOT the point, then I don't know.

As Raleigh said, you can place the point by laying your chips in the same way you'd lay odds on the DP, but start the chips just behind the pass line. I have also seen people LAY the point by doing a similar thing on the Don't Pass line, with some casinos allowing it, and some immediately moving the bet to the lay section of whatever number the point is. Once I saw a guy get really upset. He was superstitious I guess and he wanted his bet to stay on the Don't Pass line, but they wouldn't allow it. Other places do.

That sounds like it. Do you have to say anything or can you just place it?

You can just do it, but since it has become rarer, they will probably ask you "Placing the (point)?" or something similar. They also may take it and put it in the area reserved for that number, depending on the dealers. Remember though, it is a place bet, not odds (which is why I think they'd rather keep it in the place bets area) so it will not pay 2:1 on 4 and 10, but 9 to 5.

I did it today at the Wynn and put the bet on the border of the pass line towards the wall and they handled the bet very well. My wife wondered what the heck I was doing.

The dealer will place the bet in the right way to indicate that you are placing the point. So that you don't get paid 1:1 odds, you should announce that you're placing the point and make sure that the dealer knows it.

If the point is 4 or 10 and you are betting $10 or more you should buy the point and get paid 2:1 less the vig, then the dealer will put the buy button on it and move it to same place a passline bet would be.

That's a jackpot right there! :)
