The time has once again arrived for another WoV Playoff Picks Game!
The Rules are as follows:
How to Play:
1.) Anyone is welcome to play, but only participants in the 2017 WoV Picks Game, or in the 2017 Picks Game Discussion Thread will receive PM reminders tomorrow morning to make their Picks. After the Wild Card weekend, all Members who participated in Wild Card weekend will receive reminders. To play, simply PM your Picks to me before the deadline.
2.) The winner shall receive a prize of $125.
3.) I will be playing and defending the $125.
4.) I will be including $25 for a, "You Suck," prize to go to the player with the fewest points.
5.) I am also defending the, 'You Suck,' prize.
6.) This prize has no entry fee. Side bets are permitted, of course, but I will in no way be Administrating or acting as an intermediary for any side bets.
Making Picks:
1.) The Lines for each week will be posted Wednesday/Thursday before the weekend of the games being played. For each game, there shall be a Point Spread and an Over/Under, every player MUST make picks for the Point Spreads and Over/Unders of every game, there are no Confidence Picks.
2.) The winner will be determined by whoever scores the most points, how points are scored is as follows:
Wild Card + Divisional Playoffs: 1 Point for Every Correct Pick (8 Points Per Week)
Conference Championships: 2 Points for Every Correct Pick (8 Possible Points)
Super Bowl: 4 Points for Every Correct Pick (8 Points Possible)
Furthermore, for the Super Bowl, there will be ten questions based on Props that will be worth one point each. Thus, a perfect score will be 42 Points.
3.) Tie-Breaker
-When making your first set of Picks, you must send me your prediction for the Super Bowl Match-Up and final score. In the event that either or both teams do not make it to the Super Bowl, if that is the case for both players, it will come down to how many total points those teams scored in the playoffs.
-If there is a tie for the, 'You Suck,' prize, then it will be adjudicated by sucking the worst, which means having your two Super Bowl selections score the fewest total points in the Playoffs.
Making Picks
1.) Lines will be posted each Wednesday/Thursday before the games, Picks must be made BEFORE 10:00a.m. EST on the Saturday of the games. Reminders will be sent when the Lines are posted.
2.) For the final two weeks of the Playoffs, games are only played on Sunday. Therefore, Picks will be due by 10:00a.m. EST on that Sunday.
2.) Please Format your Picks the following way:
A.) No Line Breaks
B.) For Spread picks, simply put the team nickname and the spread. (Ex: Bengals +5)
C.) For Over/Unders, simply put the team nickname for EITHER team, and the Over or Under amount. (Ex: Bengals OVER 25)
So, a full set of picks might appear:
Patriots -15
Patriots OVER 52
Jaguars +12
Jaguars UNDER 42
Hopefully everyone has fun with this game, good luck to all!
As a public service, I want to highlight the requirement to submit Super Bowl predictions with the first set of picks.
The WildCard Lines are as follows:
Titans (+9) @ Chiefs (-9) O/U 44
Falcons (+6.5) @ Rams (-6.5) O/U 48.5
Bills (+9) @ Jaguars (-9) O/U 39.5
Panthers (+7) @ Saints (-7) O/U 48.5
Remember, you must pick EVERY POINT SPREAD AND OVER/UNDER as well as send your Super Bowl predictions with the first set of Picks.
FYI - I have informed Mission, that I want to add $75 of my winnings to the playoff game for 1st place. I will be playing and defending this as well. This should bring 1st place to $200.
Quote: MidwestAPAgreed, thank you Mission for putting this stuff together. It adds some entertainment to the games. Also, thanks to Ed Collins for your work in producing the weekly results.

You're welcome, everyone, and thanks for the donation, MidwestAP!
That is correct, first place is now $200 whereas last place remains at $25.
STATUS UPDATE:
I just wanted to let everyone know that I have sent the PM invitations to everyone who played in the regular 2017 WoV Picks Game or participated in the Discussion Thread, with exception to banned Members, of course.
I may have accidentally sent two PM's to a few people, so sorry about that. I was doing it kind of quickly. Also, if I missed anyone who responded in the Discussion Thread but did not play, I apologize for that, though I'm reasonably confident I didn't miss anyone.
Finally, I don't know if I made this clear in the Rules, but THERE ARE NO CONFIDENCE PICKS IN THIS GAME, if anyone does include a Confidence Pick, it's no big deal, just the, "Confidence," will be disregarded.
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU MUST PICK EVERY SPREAD AND EVERY OVER/UNDER!!! If you fail to do so, your Picks will still count, but you're going to be missing out on potential points in a highest score wins game...so don't do that!
You're very welcome and THANK YOU for the donation to the upcoming Playoff Contest!!! Very generous!Quote: MidwestAPAgreed, thank you Mission for putting this stuff together. It adds some entertainment to the games. Also, thanks to Ed Collins for your work in producing the weekly results.

COUPLE OF NOTES:
1.) With respect to the Super Bowl predictions, we have a couple of things that have happened:
A.) A few people made no Super Bowl prediction. (Typical, the two winners last year BOTH failed to make one)
B.) A few people predicted the participants and final total, but not the winner or the actual team scores.
I am resolving these issues as follows:
A1.) If no SB prediction was made, you may not now make one.
B1.) It appears as if I may not have explained clearly what I wanted for the SB. Therefore, I have PM'ed those two or three people and explained that they must keep the same teams, and the same total score, but I need the scores for each team. If they have selected a team that loses in the WildCard round before submitting their adjusted SB prediction, then the SB prediction, in its entirety, will be null and void.
---The real problem with B is that when people just submit a total I have no idea who they think the winner will be...and actually picking the winner is thew first tiebreaker. Speaking of which:
2. Super Bowl Pick Tiebreaker
I received a PM asking how the tiebreaker works for the Super Bowl prediction, I thought it would be pretty intuitive, so I didn't really explain it out too much.
The tiebreaker shall be adjudicated, if necessary, in the following order:
A.) Did you make a SB prediction at all?
If Yes/No: The person who attempted to do so is the winner.
B.) Did you pick the correct winner?
If Yes/No: The person who picked the SB winner is the winner.
If Yes/Yes: Move to C.
If No/No: Move to C.
C.) Did you pick the losing Super Bowl Participant correctly?
If Yes/No: The person who picked the losing SB team is the winner.
If Yes/Yes: Move to D.
If No/No: Move to E.
D.) For this tiebreaker to apply, one of two things happened:
-Both players selected the same Super Bowl winner AND participant, and at least one of those selections was correct.
-Both players selected one of those things right, but the other thing wrong.
D1.) Whoever comes closest on the Super Bowl score for the applicable team shall be the winner. If this fails, move to E.
E.) If no other tiebreaker has decided this at this point, it means that either the Super Bowl Winner, Losing Team, or both, was wrong for both tied players. Thus, it will be decided by:
-Of the one different selection, unless both selections were wrong, which person's selection scored the most points throughout the playoffs?
F.) If none of the above has resulted in a winner, here is the final tiebreaker:
-When the Super Bowl participants are known, each player will be asked to submit a precise margin of victory AND precise final score for the Super Bowl. If tiebreakers A-E have failed, then this final selection will apply.
3.) Making Super Bowl Picks Public
I think last year I ended up posting them, but not saying who each one belonged to. At some point today, I'll do the same thing for this year.
The question is whether or not to allow his set of Picks. The first three participant votes one way or another have it and I abstain.
I vote a big YES, ALLOW them, for the simple reason that I see no advantage that could have been gained by having studied the picks already submitted.Quote: Mission146RisingDough has submitted Picks after deadline, but well before the start of any games.

YES also.Quote: EdCollinsI vote a big YES, ALLOW them, for the simple reason that I see no advantage that could have been gained by having studied the picks already submitted.
Full Disclosure: RD also appears to have misunderstood what I wanted for the SB Pick, so he has been asked to correct that as soon as possible while maintaining the same game total.
I don't remember that being a problem at all last year, but I will be sure to make what I want for the SB much more clear next year.
Probably all you need to do is to include a Super Bowl pick in your Fake Example Picks, in the format you'd like to see it.Quote: Mission146...I don't remember that being a problem at all last year, but I will be sure to make what I want for the SB much more clear next year.

Great idea! I'll do that next year. I'll probably make one of them the Browns as a joke.
Super Bowl Prediction: Detroit Lions 41 Cleveland Browns 38Quote: Mission146Great idea! I'll do that next year. I'll probably make one of them the Browns as a joke.
(In my lifetime, the Lions have only won one playoff game. Of course, I'm only 56 years old.)

Did the Browns score 38 points this season? JK
As with last year, I want there to be a, "Big Reveal," in the event of a tie. That didn't work so well last year as the, "Big Reveal," ended up just being that neither player made a Super Bowl pick. At least that was amusing, though.
I believe I still have three people who made Picks that included a Super Bowl prediction, but did not specify the winning teams or the scores. Therefore, I don't feel like I should post the SB Picks yet as they could be, "Faded," by those people who still need to correct their picks.
I have to set some sort of deadline, though, so I am hereby giving those individuals until 11:00p.m. EST tomorrow night to make the necessary corrections. I will also state that the applicable people are the following:
RisingDough
Romes
Kmumf
There was one other person, but that person has already sent me a PM correcting the problem.
I've already sent PM's to the above three people that this must be corrected, but I am going to send a follow-up PM with the new deadline. As soon as that deadline is reached, or all three people have made corrections, the SB picks (but not who they belong to) will be posted.
Finally, a few people did not make SB Picks at all. I don't know how many off the top of my head, but I think it was between three and five. They may NOT now make SB Picks because, even if the rules were ambiguous as to precisely what I wanted with SB Picks, there can be no doubt (especially with AyeCarumba's post) that such should be made. Further, the PM reminder also stated that...although I will admit my wording was AWFUL in the reminder PM as to what I wanted out of those Picks...
Quote: PlayYourCardsRightI missed the deadline.... good luck all
In the spirit of the RisingDough decision, you may submit Picks provided you do it before the games start. Preferably ASAP, though.
Don't forget a SB Pick! The two teams and the score for each!

I'm fine with that, but if you're going to allow late picks, even though the deadline was clear, why not accept SB tiebreaker picks late as well?
Full disclosure, I'm one of those that forgot to submit the tiebresker.

Regardless of what the proper formatting of such Picks was supposed to be, there can be no question by way of the Rules, AyeCarumba's post, or the Reminder PM that some sort of Super Bowl Picks were supposed to be made.
Picks for PlayYourCardsRight added.
Picks for OneNickelMiracle added.
Super Bowl Pick for MidwestAP accepted.
NOTE: The only penalty for MidwestAP for the late SB Picks is if he shares the exact Picks with someone else (and I don't think he does) the other person wins.

I totally agree
I did it
I did not find the instructions confusing
They were pretty straight forward
I named 2 super bowl teams and their respective scores
Really surprised so many did not

By the Rules in this thread, I agree.
I think the main problem in my reminder PM is that the SB Picks could very easily be interpreted the other way. My wording was terrible:
Quote:You MUST pick against every line, spreads AND over/unders. You must also include a Super Bowl Pick to consist of the two teams you believe will make the Super Bowl as well as the final score in the event of a tie at the end of the game.
I mean, I would have read that and submitted the score for each team, but I could see where someone might read that and think I only wanted the total. And, I am making those people keep the same teams and total.
But, yes, there is no doubt there should have been some sort of SB pick.
I've got to take off right now, but if anyone else wishes to participate and can get Picks in before the start of today's first game, since that precedent was set, feel free to do so.
Beginning next week, the deadline is ABSOLUTELY 10:00a.m. EST on the day specified, which will be Saturday next week. ZERO PICKS AFTER THAT DEADLINE WILL BE ACCEPTED.

I am grateful to be included and appreciate the deadline extension. I won't oversleep next week :)
Quote: GenWyzgyGeez, even when I get something right (bet UNDER in the KC/TN game) I submit it wrong! Nice 0-2 start. Might as well settle in for another run at "you suck" for the playoffs.
Which does bring up an issue. What are the tie-breakers for the "You Suck" award? Is one of the tie-breakers "picking the super-bowl wrong?"
And, if you let contestants submit their super-bowl picks after seeing how they do in the first two games, doesn't that give them an advantage -if they go 0-4 in the first two games, might they not bias their super bowl pick so as to be incorrect, thus improving their chances of winning the $25 You Suck award?
LOL, no real need to answer. This is a free-roll tournament and I expect no one will muster any passion about the rules.

I don't think any SB picks should be accepted once the 1st playoff game has started.
Quote: terapinedI don't think any SB picks should be accepted once the 1st playoff game has started.
Was this ever an option? If it was it is a clear unfair advantage.
We’re talking about a few people who submitted two teams for the SB and a total score already, they just didn’t submit s score for each team. They must keep the same teams and total score.
Quote: Mission146No, it’s not, I think there’s a misunderstanding.

I understand that. If they picked either the Chiefs or Rams their entire super bowl pick should be void in my opinion.
Quote: SOOPOOI understand that. If they picked either the Chiefs or Rams their entire super bowl pick should be void in my opinion.
I think I see your issue. If they didn't pick who WON among their SB picks, and their picks played yesterday, that might change how they allocate the score from winner to loser. Correct?
Quote: beachbumbabsI think I see your issue. If they didn't pick who WON among their SB picks, and their picks played yesterday, that might change how they allocate the score from winner to loser. Correct?
Correct.
The Titans/Chief game, in which the O/U line was 44 points and the outcome was 43 but would have been 45 if the Titans had kicked their two extra points rather than going for 2 each time - it just feels like a coin flip.
Quote: onenickelmiracleFunny Atlanta is playing Philadelphia, but if LA won, they would be playing Minnesota. That is messed up.
Why is that 'messed up'? The NFL has re-seeded after wildcard weekend every year since going to a two wildcards and 4 division winners in each conference. It makes perfect sense that the number #1 seed (Philadelphia), plays the lowest remaining seed after the first weekend.
I just started watching football regularly again this year, first time since almost the 90s or early 2000s.Quote: MidwestAPWhy is that 'messed up'? Titans (+13.5) @ Patriots (-13.5) O/U 48
Jaguars (+7) @ Steelers (-7) O/U 41
Saints (+5) @ Vikings (-5) O/U 46.5
(I still refuse to call it the Divisional Round. Once again, no two teams that actually share a Division are playing one another.)
Reminders will go out either tonight or tomorrow morning to all who played last week.
1) Didn't see the thread/etc until after deadlines and figured my SB pick would just be null and void. I'm fine with that I guess, as I doubt with my cool picking strategy I'll end up in a tie =P.
2) That being said... tarapined you better get off my picks!
3) Something about "my life, my luck" and chinese footballs being used in the games for me to go 1-7 on a "coin flip" basis =D...
The Reminders are now being sent.
