Buzzard? FinsRule? You there?

I already started looking over the entries for Jan 4 and am leaning toward Miner's Daughter in the 1st. It's a maiden race, which scares me, but in 3 career starts she has a place and a show. She's also a Baffert trained horse and has had some solid workouts as of late.

Thoughts?

I think you are nuts with that play. If you want a Baffert angle, take Unbridled Giant in the 3rd or Black Witch in the 4th.

I bet Miner's Daughter is morning line fav in the 1st when the lines come out. I'm not locked in on Baffert, but I like the small field and the fact that this horse has been good in 2 of 3 career starts in a field that has horses that have never ran!

I understand and kind of like your logic, but this is a 4 yo maiden in Bafferts barn, he is great with the "babies" 2-3 yo's but I doubt this horse gets much attention, that is the reason I would steer clear of it, as I said before I like Unbrideled Giant, but for purposes of this contest, I wont play that, field is to big of maidens, a total crap shoot. But damn I love those genes. I may put some real money on that horse come Friday afternoon.

The Santa Anita Card on Friday is full of maiden's. It's a tough day to make a pick. I'm gonna further evaluate it, but I'm leaving heavily on Miner's Daughter. I'd love to get Buzzard's opinion, LoL.

Here Goes Miner's daughter is a 5 year old mare with physical troubles. Raced 1st time as a 4 year old in May. Pretty dead on the board at 7.80 to 1. Next start got action in terrible 6 horse field. Led at stretch, finished 3rd, beat 3 longest prices.

Did not race for 7 months. Last start finished 2nd. Did the race hurt her or sharpen her up. She does have problems.

2 Horse finished behind MD last race but was only a length behind MD at the half. Can improve !

3 horse has 8 works since Nov 12 all handily including a bullet 6f 1:12 1/5 handily from gate

4 horse 1st timer, mediocre works

5 horse Steadied start against MD, showed little

6 horse 1st timer, mediocre works

7 horse 2nd last time at 6f, 1 by 3 at the half, 10 horse field TRAINER = BAFFERT

8 horse 59 3/5 handily 5f gate, previous work 2/42 58 3/5 handily

Not my show pick of the day. NO WAY.

Good luck.

Race 1 Morning Lines:

Miner's Daughter 2/1
Nina Nicole 15/1
Regime 7/2
So Pretty 10/1
Thisonesforricky 6/1
Hair On Fire 8/1
Elusive Jackpot 5/2
Unbridled Elle 8/1

Baffert has the 2 favorites in this race based on morning lines, with my pick being the overall fav.

I think this race goes 1/3/7.

In the race that MD finished 2nd in, wasn't it a furlong longer than tomorrow's race? She should hold up running 1/8 mile less, right?

Not if she hooks up in a speed duel. But my bigger worry is that she DEFINITELY has physical troubles. This is a 5 year old mare, making her 4th start. It is a weak race, I admit that. Have not look at other races yet, but hard to believe this is today's best show bet ?

There is only 2 8 horse fields. Some races have 13-14 entries. Those are a crap shoot. I'd rather stay away from those. I like to stick to a 8-9 horse event. The card is also FULL of maiden races. This first day is going to be a doozy.

I'm going to bite on the 7 in Race 1.

"My wife" is going with "A Toast to You" in Race 7.

If I had to guess, I'd say there'll be less than 1000 left by Saturday.

Update: I'm in the the 1, Miner's Daughter, in Race 1. I'm sticking with my gut. "The wife" is locked in with the 7 in the same race. I have a strong feeling we both move on.

Miner's Daughter wins!!!!!

Not only that, I hit the trifecta for $40.20 on a $2 bet.

Only thing I wish, is that I'd have left "the wife's" pick alone. LoL

1-3-7 for the win in Race 1.

Tomorrow is a no brainier, I hope. GOLDENCENTS. A bridge jumper's delight.

1st start MSW 5 & 1/2 F track record 1.02.70 He wins by seven, hand ridden a few strides only, walks in 1.02.79

2nd start Ducks in at start, runs game second to SHANGHAI BOBBY 400K Purse

3rd start Walk at 1 & 1/16 1,000,000 Purse.

In case you did not know it, SHANGHAI BOBBY is 5 for 5, Won Breeder's Cup, Eclipse winner, early favorite for Kentucky Derby.

6 horse field

Side note : This is a grade 3 100,000 Purse. The SHAM stakes. Sham ran second in Kentucky Derby and Preakness. He then changed tactics and ran with the winner of those 2 races stride for stride and it ruined him. He never raced again. The horse that defeated him in those three races....... SECRETARIAT !

Goldencents is a champion is a weak 6 horse field. This is all about surviving. You do not get bonus points for handicapping.

Goldencents will not pay even to win, he will pay 2:10 to show and possibly create a minus show pool. Not a hard choice for me. NO WAY !!!!

I was not impressed with Goldencents. That's not how I want a Derby horse looking.

He was an easy showvivor pick.

I'm probably just going to go the safe route with Mizdirection tomorrow.

That's right, Boz. Sorry.

Fins, how did Goldencents not look good? Stalked the leader from 2nd the entire race and then turned it on at the stretch to win by 1 1/2. I thought it was a pretty good early season run for a Derby horse.

Also: I think I'm going with Kindle tomorrow in the same race as Mizdirection.

Ugh, I wrote a long response, and it got erased. Basically, he lugged in, and it took him until like 30 yards from the finish to actually straighten out and draw away.

He has a lot of improving to do. Coil, who won the San Pasqual, would have beaten him by 4-5 lengths in this race.

He only has 4 races total. Great potential and who knows what he will do by Derby time.

How the hell could people get eliminated yesterday by not having him ?

Same with Mizdirection today. 12 starts 7 wins and 4 seconds. Oh, and that third she was fouled, finished 4th, moved up to 3rd.

It was a 7f race and if not fouled, she would have passed Groupie Doll.

Need I say more.
