WMS slots with cascading reels

My wife seems to like these wms slots with the cascading reels - I guess it feels like a mini bonus round to her. I was wondering if they worked on the same principle as bonus rounds? Is the payout and/or decision to cascade determined at the time the rng is stopped? I would assume so, but hate to burst her bubble. If I could only get her to play vp more consistently....

With any slot game the reels determine the win, not the other way around. The reels are always the same every spin.
