I noticed that the slot machine win percentage for Jan 2011 (last month reported) had a very high win percentage. What strikes me is that nearly every category of slot machine was higher than the average for the last year.
The only exceptions were nickel machines and $100 machines. Nickel machines are a very small percentage of the overall machines (1/40 of total revenue), and $100 machines (1/500 of total revenue) are notoriously variable since large payouts can significantly change from month to month, and often result in an overall loss for the casino for the month.
Usually when this happens to a table game I attribute it to longer play time and recycling the original dollars. The win percent in baccarat always goes way up during Chinese New Years.
I just find it hard to believe that this could happen for every type of slot machine in one month.
The end result was a reduction of coin-in by 2.4% for Jan 2011 over Jan 2010, but and increase by 9.3% for slot revenue.
Por que?

Look to the DATES on which January statistics started and stopped.
The computers know instantly what "coins" have been bet and what TITO stuff has been created and utilized.
What the computers do not know exactly on time is how many dollar bills are sitting in the drop boxes of each machine. They ain't gonna go around and find out at an inconvenient time just because of the calendar.
Same reason why a casino "day" starts at 4:00am. Its inconvenient to have it start at midnight and would interfere with making money. So too would emptying all those slot machine drop boxes exactly at a certain calendar date. Why call in the crew on a weekend? Wait till Monday. Its cheaper (and more fun) to puzzle the math whizzes.

I voted for statistical fluctuation.

Did anyone write a column specifically about nickel slots?
Did any casino make a massive change to its nickel slot machines?

Quote: WizardI voted for statistical fluctuation.
Maybe, but the same phenomena shows up for downtown, except $5 and $25 machines which are very small percentage (1/60 and > 1/500 of total).
Possibly people feel more confident and they gamble longer.
