As I only play slots when I have free-play or some other edge I rarely notice much about them. But I was killing time before a gig so U went down the block and cruised through the casino. I saw two things I really hadn't noticed before:
1. There is a new breed of slots with an "individual progressive" on them. IOW the bank of machines and one will have $8,000 as the total progressive and another has $11,000. Same machine otherwise.
2. Same as above but it is spelled out "Must pay out by $500.00"
So I got to wondering, is there ever a level of bonus one should look for to expect a positive EV on this kind of machine?

All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others

Yes, it is just determining what that level is where it becomes positive.
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

Depends on the base return, how close it is, what it must hit by, and the meter rate. They're all different.

They are called Mystery Progressives and there are threads here about them. Mission has covered them pretty good.
