Hey guys - I need some help wtih this year's Oscars predictions. We have a pool at work, where there are about a dozen categories. Every prediction you get right is worth points, highest point total wins the entire pool. Entry is $2 and you can submit as many as you want.
I've decided to crawl the internet and gather a consensus from a dozen or so prediction websites. This got me to second place last year - I lost only by one point. However, this year there is no consensus for a few categories. Can you guys help me out?
Best actor in a leading role:
.George Clooney (The Descendants)
.Jean Dujardin (The Artist)
-I think I might submit two entries because the internet is so split on this category
Animated feature film:
.Puss in Boots
.Rango
-about 75% say Rango will win, but of those, many mention that a Puss in Boots win would not be surprising
Costume Design:
.The Artist
.Hugo
-no strong consensus
Cinematography:
.Hugo
.The Tree of Life
-no strong consensus
Makeup:
.Harry Potter
.The Iron Lady
-really split

Alright, I've decided to go with the votes in this poll. I will submit two entries for the best actor since its also split here. Thanks for the help, I'll let you know how I do!

My gut says Harry Potter is going to win one pretty much as a reward for the entire series of films, and people are going to remember the final scene with the kids made up as adults (IIRC, that was entirely makeup - I think they had originally done it with effects, but they didn't like the way it turned out).

It does seem funny that 8 years ago they gave the TLR: Return of the King the Best Picture partly in acknowledgement of the accomplishment of making the trio of films, and they couldn't give a single technical award to the final Harry Potter film.

My guess:
LOTR trilogy - films most Academy members would go see themselves
HP "octology" - films most Academy members would have their kids sent off with their nannies to see
Perhaps had they waited until the "Harry Potter generation" were adults before starting to make the films, it would have done better.
