Football Pool question

Hiya Wiz,
Longtime listener, first time poster.
In your Ask the Wizard, you have a general question from Sam about a football pool. I have no problem with the content of your answer, but I wish you would've corrected his view that the pool is not "such a great bet". Actually, if all the $500 collected is returned as winnings, this is an excellent bet with no "house edge" whatsoever. These kinds of pools are very "grassroots": no gambling industry required, just an office copy machine.
