The question for the poll is which film do you think should win Best Picture?
I found Mad Max: Fury Road to be overrated. I wish I liked it as much as most people seemed to...
The Revenant was good. But hollow. Just an exercise in highly technical filmmaking with a simple story.
Haven't seen any of the others, but honestly would like to see all of them.
The Academy gave Alejandro Inarritu Best Director and Best Picture last year for Birdman. How often have they ever rewarded the same director/movie two years in a row?
The Producers, Directors, and Writers guilds give out their own awards, and there has not really been consensus amongst them this year (and many of the various guild members are Academy members as well).
If the betting markets say The Revenant will win, it probably will. Just doesn't seem like as big of a slam dunk as most years...
Interesting that you brought up Remember The Titans. My wife, Sparkles, attended that High School, TC Williams in Alexandria VA during the era depicted in the movie. She was a chearleader for THAT team. She was not consulted in the making of the film ;-(Quote: Gabes22I am voting the Martian even though I haven't seen it. I haven't seen a movie in the theatre since Remember the Titans.
It's a small world after all.
Brian Cranston NOMINATED for Best Actor.
Quote: DRichI have seen exactly one movie in the theater in the last ten years and it was horrible. The last good movie made was Shawshank Redemption.
That movie sucked.
finally a legitimate reason to block a poster.Quote: AcesAndEightsThat movie sucked.
Quote: ams288I voted for The Martian as the should win Best Picture. Just a great film overall. Acting, directing, screenplay, and visual effects are all brilliant.
One night a week or so ago I was bored and decided to rent this movie ( The Martian ). Just from some of the previews I seen I figured it wasn't going to be very good. This is all subjective but I was right. Horrible movie. I really think almost everything was unrealistic. The funniest part was when he rebuilt that room with some plastic and Duct Tape. They should of put Macgyver as the lead role instead for this movie! Speaking of using Duct Tape... he also uses it to seal his cracked glass on his helmet while in the Martian Atmosphere... Duct Tape always fixes everything lol!!
Also the writing for some of the dialogue made me kinda sick. Something like ... "I am going to have to science the sh**t out of this" lol. I don't mind some good Science Fiction every once in awhile but this was a pretty dull movie. I had to fast forward the last 20mins or so. I guess Gravity was worse but not much worse. One thing is for sure though is that modern movies are going downhill very fast.
I would love to see the odds of all the math that they tried to make work on the fly in the movie. What are the odds that you could really grow potatoes where he grew them lol! Odds on flying around in space with putting a hole in your suit to be able to catch a woman who is connected to a ship .... my brain hurts just trying to describe all this BS lol.
On a side note I think Sam Rockwell has a better version of this movie called "Moon" even though its not mars it is sorta the same movie with a better ending.
This is all subjective though. I think my favorite movie is The Hustler and even though Let It Ride has bad reviews it is still a favorite to watch.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was 4 years after Shawshank...
Swingers after Shawshank as well...
"Vegas Baby"
"Double Down... You always double down on 11 Baby"

Of course the book was so much better then the movie regarding the Martian
I enjoyed the movie
The book goes into quite a lot of scientific detail regarding the ability to grow potatoes on Mars.
I liked Moon a lot, really good movie

I will check out this movie ( actually it's sitting over there on the table - from NetFlix, rented for my sons ).
Growing potatoes on Mars been on my bucket list for over 45 years, truth...

They probably didn't want anybody who, and pardon me for saying this, really did "remember the Titans" involved, considering that, except for one early-season game, every game the team played was won in a blowout, including the state championship game.
Disney still goes to the "okay, we fudged a few things" well; McFarland USA is about a school that won California's first high school boys' cross country championship (and eight more since then), but they conveniently forget to mention that there is no "overall" high school cross country championship in California; the state divides the school into divisions based on enrollment, and McFarland's titles were in lower divisions. In fact, the coach complained when he was told one year that his team was "too good" to stay in its current division and had to be moved to Division 1.
I don't know what bet to offer to make this post relevant. Anyone want to bet I don't watch the movie before I die ( I should give long odds since I'm still feelin' frisky). But you never know, one breath at a time ;-)
Quote: WizardDoes anyone recall the scene in The Martian where every scientist at JPL is trying to figure out how to save the Martian. Suddenly one of them has a flash of genius -- have the returning spacecraft slingshot around earth and go back. Shouldn't that idea have been considered by any one of them within the first few minutes? Seems pretty obvious to me.
Yes, I do remember it, and yes, I agree, it was obvious from the start to anyone who's ever read good hard science fiction. That said, I read the book before I saw the movie. The BOOK was fantastic; the movie was better than OK, but if you hadn't read the book, you were probably screwed, as they went really fast over things that the book explained really well, and both the math and the detailed science were in the book. FWIW, the book was very true to possible science, and the author went through many peer-reviewed revisions before it was published as a book. He wrote it on a forum/website like this one, full of engineers and designers, a chapter at a time, and they reviewed and revised every facet of the science before moving on to the next task.
Just think what the combined knowledge and brainpower on this forum could do if we put our minds to it.

Design an actual poker playing dog and take over the world?

Figure out a way to eat 100 McNuggets? Hehe..
Actually, I'd like to see us determine the actual range of influence a human could have on the dice at a Craps table. 0 = No influence ... 10 = Full Control.

Seems like a pretty big upset to me.
Quote: ams288Mark Rylance wins Best Supporting Actor over Sly Stallone. Huge upset!
Ooo. Glad I stayed out of it this year. Rocky gets snubbed again (Sly was nominated, but did not win, as Best Actor for Rocky -- despite the film winning best picture).
Quote: ams288Spotlight wins Best Picture. Another upset, although Best Picture was never a sure bet this year....
The Revenant was a -260 favorite. Normally I only like to bet the huge favorites, so probably would have left that one alone. Plus, I just saw the movie yesterday and I didn't think it was that great.
Between that and Sly losing for best supporting actor, it was not a good night for sharp bettors on the Oscars. Again, glad I left it alone this year.
The likelihood of the main character not dying from frostbite at least a dozen times during the movie is equivalent to the likelihood of someone rolling 18 yos in a row. I expect to 'suspend disbelief' in a movie like "Superman", or "Star Wars", but not so much in a movie like "The Revenant". Calling 'The Revenant" a good movie is akin to saying the emperor is fully dressed.
Some of those 'virtual' roller coaster rides get my adrenaline pumpin'. I haven't seen Revenant yet ( (soon - think netflix ), but I did see Ex Machina, nice plot twists and turns I thought. I gonna go with HowMany, yes.Quote: WizardI'm not saying the Revenant is a bad movie but I felt like I was in one of those roller coaster simulators like they have at the Excalibur. I also question the plausibility of it. I enjoyed Ex Machina much more and that didn't get any respect this year from the Academy.
