Online gaming seems to be hitting middle age in the form of regulations being discussed. A couple worth discussing here.

"Risk-free" bets, usually sports but there are other offenders. Now, unless they refund all losses in cash I think "risk free" is misleading. So do more than a few lawmakers. Hopefully this line is heard no more by NFL season.

Problem gambler disclaimers. States set up problem gambler hotlines, a good thing. But they did it one by one, not a great thing when it comes to ads. If the ad is on TV it ends up needing 0.001 point font so all the various numbers can be seen. If it is radio/podcast someone has to talk 10 miles a minute to get it all in. And it is always just spoken as available. One good idea is do like they did with smoking years ago and require every 5th ad be an ad about problem gambling. Let the company put their name there "Draft Kings wants you to bet responsibly" if they like. Or just get a national number. All the X11 numbers are probably gone but surely we could figure something out.

DISCUSS.

1-800-522-4700 seems to be nationwide, but I understand that's not a short number.

777 may be unavailable. 888 is definitely unavailable.

It would be nice if there were a single 3 digit code that automatically routes your call to a local (non-emergency) help operator. They could use the same number for all referrals; no matter if you're hooked on gambling, strong drink, or other.
May the cards fall in your favor.

Kind of what I am talking about. But 9-1-1 is obviously out. 7-1-1 is for deaf calls. 3-1-1 IIRC is for homeless vets. there is a limit there.

You really want 777 for a problem gambler number???? lol

On "Gamble On" they said there are several numbers for problem gambling, not one nationwide. I am going on that.

I dunno, I just got the number off the National Council on Problem Gambling website.

It seems that support resources are provided by the states.

I have no idea if their hold music is in the key of C, and I'm trying desperately to keep any really snide speculations to myself.

I think they need to chill a little bit on the AMOUNT of adverts in general. I get that individually companies need to get market share to survive.

However, on the aggregate, it’s a negative outcome of legal gambling for the general public. Most people not participating don’t care if it’s legal or not as long as it’s not affecting them. When they’re being bombarded with sports betting advertisements any time they turn on the tv, radio, or drive down the street they are no longer not being disrupted, it’s no longer not affecting them and they aren’t just being left alone.

The volume of mass advertising does the opposite of acceptance of overall public, it makes them a nuisance instead. The industry moves from plausibly being a community asset to being an occupying force any time it’s legally allowed.

I would like to see a ban on all TV ads for casinos, casino apps and anything else related to gambling.

Don't tell me that they can't ban the ads. They did with cigarettes.

Smokers are still going to smoke.

Besides, when you're expanding Medicare/Medicaid, other forms of Government-funded (whole or in part) medical care, then you eventually come to the conclusion that the tax dollars made on cigarette sales are eventually not going to be enough to justify the expenses associated with caring for illnesses that might have been preventable.

Gambling makes sense. The Government rakes in the tax money from the online casino site revenues and there are generally not any long-term (physical) health issues that the Government will be, in whole or in part, paying for.

The Legislators are simply not going to slit the state treasury's throat like that. It's pretty much as simple as that, imo. Also, you get into a Free Speech issue. Even beyond that, there's going to be a challenge if casinos may not advertise, but the state lottery is permitted to advertise---no judge is going to be able to allow for one, but not the other, and the states aren't going to do anything that would prohibit the lottery from advertising.

Do people still watch commercials? I rarely watch live tv and simply fast forward thru commercials. Even sporting events, I generally start watching whn they are half over and FF thru dead time and ads so to catch up to the live broadcast near its end.
The difference between fiction and reality is that fiction is supposed to make sense.

You can ban private companies from advertising gambling by giving the state a monopoly on it. EZPZ.

Was the hold music Viva Las Vegas? I think that's in G Major.

National 3-digit numbers no longer have to end in 11. 988 is the national number for the suicide prevention hotline. (In fact, in order to implement it in my area code (707), calls within the area code have to be dialed starting with 1707.)

777 seems easier to remember than, say, 0118 999 881 999 119 725... 3.
