I just got back from Vegas and Friday afternoon I was at a table at Paris where a Southern gentleman was winning tons of money by playing the pass line and taking full odds and then placing all of the numbers except for the one that was the point. I assume he was buying the 4 and 10. He was doing this by putting $1000 on each number! I couldn't believe it.

Anyway, I often see people play this way (one PL bet with full odds and placing/buying the other 5 numbers). What is the edge for this? Variance?

BTW, I only won $25 bucks on that table. Once I joined it cooled off quickly. LOL.

The guy is no doubt a long time loser. Place bets have a descent house edge. If he's placing every number every roll, then he's giving the house big money in the long run.

I assume they do't let you buy the 5 & 9? That leaves those at 4%.

A few questions:

What was his pass line bet?

What were the odds limits (i.e. 3x / 4x / 5x)?

If the point is made immediately, that leaves the bets on 5 numbers outstanding - would be bet another $1000 on each number once the next point was established? What if he already has the table limit on a number - can he add to it?

His pass line bet was $1000. For the sake of my question, use the table minimum as the pass line bet with full odds after the point is established. The odds were 3 4 5X. He would only cover the numbers that weren't the point.

Again, for my question, I am just interested in the edge for one pass line bet with full odds and the other 5 numbers covered, either place or buy, whichever is cheapest.

Pass line bet with 3-4-5x odds is around .3% I think
Place 6 and 8 are 1.52%
Place 5 and 9 are 4% (2% in Biloxi where you can Buy, vig on Win)
Buy 4 and 10 are 4.78% for vig up front, or 1.67% for Vig on Win

Assuming
Buy 4/10 for $1000
Place 5/9 for $1000
Place 6/8 for $1002 ( for no breakage - would pay $1169)

So Box numbers would have $4000 at 4.3% (4,5,9,10)
$2,004 at 1.52% (6 and 8)

The PL+odds bet would be $4,000 to $6,000 depending on the point.
Total amount in action would be $9,004 (4&10), $10,004 (5&9), or $11,002 (6&8).

So roughly 50% of his money is on a .3% bet, and the rest is around 4% aggregate, depending on the point.
