Take the line and pay the don't!
An ode to craps.
Why do I like this game? It's just two dice rolled together and then added up. The problem is well constrained and the math is well known. Seven or eleven is twice as likely as two, three, or twelve starting out on this game. If you didn't win or lose then it's onto a road that may be long or may be short as you wait for your point to resolve. Now seven is against you, but you back up your first bet with odds. The game pays true there. Sure that four is twice as likely to lose, but the back pays double. Bet less and win more. That's the right side.
Maybe you think the table is cold or you are in a contrarian mood. You can throw the game into reverse and play the other way. Sometimes people look at you funny, but it's your money. Now you realize that seven or eleven is the cost of doing business on the dark side. You're pleasantly surprised when two or three show up to give back a little that was taken away at the front. Twelve leaves you to fight another day, but there is always midnight in the middle if you want to cover your bases. Once you are through to the point, you're relieved. Nothing in life is sure, but at least the odds are in your favour. Now you revel in that sixty one. That pip is no longer that evil eye that stares at you, but a wink that tells you you've won.
No matter which way you play, those wild swings thrill you or crush you. Six close to seven, but oh so tantalizingly frequent. Hoping for seven when you've got don't pass and don't come. Pressing that eight that just keeps hitting. Colouring up just in time as that new shooter turns the table or washing out in defeat. Either way you know you'll be back again.

Was this to be read as a poem? I'm so confused.

Let's hear some casino stories, some vacation stories. More reflections, please?
I think the last time I played craps was about a year ago. I bought in for $100 at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas. Made some $5 don't bets with $20 odds. Lost all four bets pretty fast. There was just one other guy at the table quietly enjoying betting the line.
Timing is everything.
About 5 years ago at the same casino there was a hooker playing $5 on Big 8. We convinced her to place the 8 for $6.

Yeah, it's a poem. Just thought I'd render it like one in the first few lines.

I wrote it for fun.
I guess you could call it free verse.
