I was playing with two friends at Casino Arizona on a 6D, H17 game. We were each betting one hand of $10, pooling the bankroll to lessen variance. No other players.

I was dealt A-8 in middle position with a 6 up. I doubled, and got a 4. Third base stands, and dealer turns over a 16 to bust with a 10.

I joke: "Nobody noticed my brilliant play!"

Dealer says, "I have never seen anyone make that play. But it is the correct play." She then talks about how she reads the Wizard of Odds site, and would love to meet the Wizard and get his autograph.

By the way, she was drop-dead gorgeous.

Mike, that female fan convention is looking less and less like a pipe dream ...

It was certainly correct that time irrespective of what any chart might or might not say: she would have received that 4 and then would have had 20 to your Soft 19. I would never have had the courage to hit a Soft 19 though.

This play comes very seldom so really does not affect the bottom line much, but I enjoy making it each and everytime it does arise !!

The best is catching a 2 w/ a big bet out and watch everyones eyes bug out !!

My question is this , if the 5 and 6 bust the same percent, why not double vs 5 as well ??

Every other double is at least vs 5 and 6 .

It's because of the hit soft 17. With a six up, there is a chance she has an ace under and that gives her more opportunities to bust.

The dealer 6 is more likely to turn into a soft 17 than the 5 (say, by flipping an A). That soft 17 could then bust, whereas in S17 the dealer would not bust. This is why it turns out you dbl the 6, while the first reason is why you don't dbl the 5.

When the casino already has an advantage, knowing what the optimal play is and having the courage to do it is probably best even though a less than optimal play is "close".

Its good to see a dealer who takes an interest in her work and actually knows Basic Strategy. Even better if she is gorgeous.

At my local Indian casino its hard to find a dealer who is alert to anything but tokes.

Thanks! That makes my day. If you see her again tell her I'd be happy to give her my autograph her next trip to Vegas. I can be reached through the "contact" form on this site.

The funny part is the amount of people who thought "Damn Fool"... but were glad they were silent in the end.

The Wizard of Odds site had taught me, too, to double A-8 vs 6 at an H17 game. While playing heads up vs a pretty dealer, I did that double and lost. She ridiculed me, and I said, "I'll bet you that it's the right play! Look it up when you get home." She said, "I don't have to look it up. I know it's the wrong play!"

>While playing heads up vs a pretty dealer, I did that double and lost.
Its the optimal play but its still a gamble.
>She ridiculed me,
I guess her toke box reflected that ridicule as well as reflecting the fact that she made no comment to you in an attempt to warn you of your making an "incorrect" play.
>She said, "I don't have to look it up. I know it's the wrong play!"
Yeah, ... common attitude. Whats that about none so stupid as those who will not learn.
