The 3 Rivers Casino in Oregon has a BJ side bet called Slingo. I'm sure the odds greatly favor the casino but can anyone tell me or explain how to figure the odds for this side bet. They use a 6 deck shoe. I've searched here and at Wizard Of Odds and can't find any previous posts about this. The following 9 options are available with the payout next to it.

pair 12-1
Total 17 12-1
Total 18 14-1
Total 19 15-1
Total 20 8-1
Total 21 19-1

Total 17 or 18 6-1
Total 18 or 19 6-1
Total 20 or 21 5-1
Total 17 to 20 2-1

I had a woman sit down next to me and bet $10 on each of the hard total options for a $50 side bet total each hand (+ a $10 regular play bet). She hit a side bet payout on 7 or 8 of the 10 hands, pocketed several hundred dollars in profits and left the table. I'm guessing she had a nice lucky streak and had enough sense to quit while she was ahead.

My results:

pair 0.07395498392283 12 -0.038585209003215
17 0.071234232005936 12 -0.07395498392283
18 0.065050704922088 14 -0.024239426168687
19 0.059361860004947 15 -0.050210239920851
20 0.093989611674499 8 -0.15409349492951
21 0.047489488003958 19 -0.050210239920851

18 is by far the best bet at -2.4%, with pair being distant second at -3.9%

The second part of the table is obviously inferior - for a combination of two numbers it just picks the lower payout. For example 17 or 18 pays 6 to 1, but if you just bet 17 and 18 instead, you'll get either 6 or 7 if you win, which is obviously better. Likewise 17 to 20 offers 2 to 1, which is equivalent to making four separate bets and winning with 20, while winning with any other number will yield better payout.

Thanks so much for taking your time to do this weaselman. As I suspected there is no advantage to be gained but it sits better with me when I know the actual numbers. It also allows me to explain it to friends who feel it's a better bet than the actual game. When situations occur such as I saw with a player making a killing right off the bat and leaving with the cash it makes such an impression on people (including me).

On a related note - nothing annoys me more at a table when the novice player at 3rd base makes the "incorrect" move and someone jumps his shit when he has taken the dealer's bust card. This happens so often that it's to my disadvantage to stick up for the novice. When someone does it to me though I'm glad folks like you have explained to me the math so that I can say more than "it makes no difference in the long haul - really". I don't get all professorial but I can speak with conviction when letting the complainer know how full of shit he is. I know I can back up my claim when necessary.
