By detection, I mean being asked for ID at the cage..

Has anyone here played a year without being detected by surveilance?

Should every counter accept detection as a common occurance.
Born in Texas and lived in Texas my whole life.

Impossible to know. Sometimes blackjack players are detected as card counters and still allowed to play for lots of different reasons. Based on my experiences playing and talking to others, if you stay under a purple chip and under an hour the larger places won't bother you even if they know they're losing a few dollars to you.

If someone asks for my ID at the cage I tip them $1 for pretending like I can still pass for under 21

Tom gave a pretty good reply.

For my personal situation the answer happens to be yes. My teammate and I went undetected for about a couple years at a few places we frequented at the time. For what it's worth, we were under the purple chip bet and generally "took a break" after exposing our max bets before returning to different tables at the same place because we were a bit landlocked to a few casinos. We also used some cover and I knew several of the pits and always made them laugh... Whether or not that had anything to do with it, not sure, but a couple years, something about our act must have helped.
Playing it correctly means you've already won.
