ONE.
And it was not really a backoff as such; they would let me play just not let me raise my bet significantly. It was a day shift at a silly little casino and I doubt the dealer was even 21. It was two minimum bets and then I wanted to do a third bet at fifty dollars. Not even enough time to determine a count, even if I had been able to do so.
Long, long time ago when Vegas was running scared and Thorpe was a National Hero.
