Last trip to Vegas I saw many $25 tables only paying 6/5 on a blackjack. After a while I started doubling down when the dealer was showing a 4-5 or 6. Is this a smart play or did I just get lucky with my results?

It is not a smart play. And so is playing 6/5. There are many 3:2 games left. This is the most important single rule to find when choosing a game.

Lucky with your results? WHAT results? I will take a wild guess and say you got unlucky with your results.

I actually made out pretty well from the double downs. Granted this was on a very small scale, probably less than ten shoes. For some reason I convinced myself it wasn't a horrible move against the obvious bust cards. Judging by the advice here I'll be giving up doing that. Just becomes frustrating when casinos are only offering 6/5.

On average, dealer will bust less than half the time when showing these "bust" cards.

Chinaski: “Oh, yeah?”
Wanda: “You hate them?”
Chinaski: “No, but I seem to feel better when they’re not around.”

The TC would have to be about +20 to double on a BJ against a 4,5 or 6. And it would really draw attention.
