First time, long time. Wonderful site.
Want to run something by you guys and get your opinions.
Buddy bets $10k a hand at BJ and is down like $250k at Foxwoods. He calls up his "good luck charm." She sits with him at his private table and he hands her cut card hoping to change his luck. He's down to his last $50K or so. She cuts every shoe and he proceeds to go on a sick heater. An hour later he's up $100k.
Now here's the part that gets me. She didn't play. Had no stake in the game. Just cut the damn cards. And he gives her 10k!!!!
He told me it's like tipping a dice roller who goes on a heater. I'm like whatever dude.
What do you think? Am I out of line to be so harsh?

I see your point. But then I read the threads on how to tip dealers. And I'm in the service industry in a casino and rely on tips myself. That 10k would take me years to make in tips.

If someone is wacky enough to have a person on call who's a good luck charm, and is rich enough or dumb enough to be betting 10k a hand i'm not sure why you think he's more dumb for giving her 10k.
If she doesn't gamble or do drugs then giving her the 10k is perhaps the smartest thing he did. The money can go to good use.

Question: Why did he wait until he was down 250k before he called in his charm? Why not just have assure he had good luck at the beginning? He would probably have been up 300k

The guy only tipped the good luck charm one bet. It's just a very big bet. There's a good chance that he'd like something in return.

To go from being down 25 units to being up 10 units is a nice turn of events. What I'm wondering is how good a blackjack player he is.

Lol at tipping 4 percent of bankroll - like tipping 100 dollars on a 2500 jackpot on vp- also to her 10k a hand I would hope he walking in with more then 250. Your buddy sounds wacky all the way around

Although, I think it'd be fair to give her something for her trouble for coming to the casino. If someone thought I was their good luck charm, I ain't showing up to the casino for free.

When I read the thread title, I said "No way." Then I read your post.

Really? We're talking about an acquaintance of his, not a random stranger. And we're talking about one bet.

The fact that the one bet is a fortune to you and me is irrelevant.

The OP is seeking opinions in several locations...I wonder if he is getting the answer he would like to hear????

My thought--he can do whatever he wants to do with his money.

He knows her. She wasn't a stranger. Just seemed way excessive to me. That's all I'm saying. And I didn't know one board had exclusive rights to my posting over another ;)

I just was wondering (when I wrote that) if anyone on the boards gave you the answer you wanted to hear...

Again, my thought is his money, his call.

If you said that the guy owed you $1,000 and tipped her $10,000 and did not repay you at the same time, I'd feel differently about it.

I was in a similar, yet much less profitable situation a year or so back. I was playing at a $10 table, having a streak of bad luck myself. I was on 1st base and the guy next to me was betting $500 to $1K a hand, which had me in awe already...lol! The cut made its way to me and he had been doing poorly. His luck turned and the table had me cut for the next several hands. He kept winning and eventually went from a few grand down to a few grand up. For the next several shoes, after the second time I cut, he started tossing $25 to $50 my way every few rounds! I was on a horrible losing streak but was able to keep playing at least for several more hours because of his generosity!! He might have been a little tipsy as well...pun intended!!! And I had never met this guy before in my life, never even got his name! Luckily he did not ask for any "favors" afterwards!!

There needs to be a term for the profession, but casinos are fertile grounds for such "good luck charms" to pry their trade. I've come across several in my travels, especially in Panama where I bet big enough to warrant their attention. Well, that big player can do what he wants. Hopefully he got more than some "good luck" in return. My compliments to the good luck charm for a successful night.
