On the Wizard's Odds site he has a house edge calculator for BJ. I was wondering what the option "Player loses only original bet against dealer BJ" means. The default option is "Yes" but when I switch it to "No" the house edge goes up. What does that option even mean?

European No Hole Card rule. Dealer takes a hole card only after players play their hands. And doubles and splits ALL lose to a dealer bj.

Some casinos, particularly in Europe (I think) play such that a dealer does not peek for Blackjack before the player takes any action. Losing only the original bet occurs when the Dealer peeks (Because the player would not get the opportunity to double anyway) or when the Rules stipulate that the player only loses the original bet if the Dealer does not peek.

Perhaps the most common example is a player total of 11 against a dealer showing 10, if the Dealer Peeks and doesn't have it, then the player should double down. If the Dealer either does not Peek or does not take a hole card at all, then the player hits the 11.

It affects the House Edge because a player only doubles when he/she has an advantage on the hand, and there are fewer opportunities to do that. Other changes include hitting 8-8 against an Ace and hitting A-A against an Ace rather than Splitting your Aces.

Also... When I'm referencing the house edge in a particular game do I refer to the Optimal Results? Or the Basic Strategy with Cut Card (assuming that's the game I'm playing).

Re-read it. In Vegas (and most other places) the answer is YES.

You're right, but I meant no as in you don't lose all bets to a dealer bj because you take no action before it's revealed. Sorry for any confusion.

You asked, they answered, both correctly but mis-understood each other's answers.
Was your question really real to begin with?
I seem to remember your last long weekend in Vegas turned into six weeks or something...

Yeah, it can be confusing wording.

When the dealer shows an ace, in most areas, (all of US and many other areas), after offering insurance, the dealer will check for BJ. If he has it, you lose your original bet. Answer "Yes".

In some areas, the dealer doesn't check, or may not deal himself a hole card. In that scenario, if you double or split, you only will lose only your original bet if the dealer has BJ. Answer "Yes".

In some areas, particularly Europe, the dealer doesn't check, and if you double or split, you'll lose everything if he had BJ. Answer "No".

Now do you get it?
