I hope to hit San Diego at some point in the not terribly distant future. Even when I win, I am beginning to loathe the northeast casinos...was offered a very nice & free room @ Mohegan & turned it down...I'm pretty much afraid to eat there or touch anything...lol?

Most of the SD regulars stick to "Rincon Row" which is about 6+ casinos all in a 10-12 mile stretch of road. From what I have heard though Barona has always been pretty generous towards new players. They also have one of the highest VP offerings at 99.92% payback.

teddys recently did a report of the local SD casinos, maybe take a look at that and it might help some questions you have.

Looking at the video poker list on VPFree2, I would probably play 99.8 triple bonus plus before 2 pair joker poker. That game is rough. Perfect basic strategy only returns 99.896%. Tons of exceptions.

ALL of the San Diego area casinos should be considered as "locals casinos." They don't really have the features of resorts, there are no regular shows and special shows are few but Pechanga probably has the best of the show calendars. The only benefit for out of towners coming to the San Diego casinos is because its close to San Diego, the Anaheim resorts including Disneyland, and Los Angeles sports and of course the beaches.

But I just don't understand why anyone would make a special trip to the San Diego casinos when Vegas has so much more to offer.

Barona backed me off their single deck game for spreading to two times the table minimum. The game had almost no house edge but jeez, they wouldn't even let me bet the minimum. This was a few years ago and I know it probably won't help you. The reason I posted at all was because of your Mohegan Sun comments.

Now kitties, you can't leave us hanging. I have a love/hate relationship with this casino as well as a lot of experience there. Tell us about your times at MS and don't leave anything out. There are a few threads on the Connecticut casinos if you'd rather post there. Either way, I'd love to hear your comments.

The Jan. 10th Undercover Boss episode is going to feature Mohegan Sun. The show has been there before, for Johnny Rocket's, but this one is about the casino itself.

You're afraid to eat at Mohegan Sun? That's a very weird statement. There are lots of great restaurants there. Bar Americain. Jordan's Steakhouse. Summer Shack.

It wasn't anything terribly remarkable, I just had a very unpleasant & somewhat costly experience in July/August. I had a suite with a decent rate...which, of course, meant i would be getting the room with the dried puke spot on the couch (assuming it was cleaned over multiple times, but still a grossout factor), boogies on the bathroom wall (in the half-bath), & other unpleasantries. We didn't discover it early enough to switch rooms, nor did we really spend a ton of time in there because we like to gamble...when I politely mentioned this to the staff upon checkout I was offered buffet tickets. We took 'em. Worst. Idea. Ever. Luckily, as people who examine our food thoroughly before eating, my girl & I escaped unscathed. Don't get me wrong, we had very low expectations...just didn't expect to find a small & curly in the "banana bomb". as for anything bobby flay...i heard from at least two very reliable sources about how this man is not beyond murdering a shite & then not washing his hands & going right back to cooking. He has been spotted at that location a number of times...I don't know how I feel about all that. I start pondering food handling & then I never want to eat again...had our guts murdered at that mexican place in mohegan early in 2012, was straight up ignored & served grease bombs by another michael jordan-owned establishment (although at least they owned up to this & did not charge us as a result), got served by a girl who was most definitely on opiates @ johnny rockets (though the to-go location on the way out the door wasn't bad at all)...& that's just what immediately comes to mind. I'll say I've enjoyed pepe's, the todd english place (for breakfast), & bobby's burgers (after making absolutely sure he wasn't anywhere near the place...chefs looked respectable, & i escaped unscathed). That's about it though...everywhere else seems to be real terrible for you food to begin with, nevermind the fact that you are likely to experience very mediocre treatment &/or food.

As for the casino, itself...they've got a pretty fair blackjack game with "lucky dealers" (aka terrible variance not helped by awful deck pen). Their rules are pretty effective against counting...which they know & i believe is the reason you can spread liberally with little fanfare. So at mohegan, I play with a solid BS & resist the urge to count. I also don't like how the crowds can get very overwhelming at times...that & I experienced several misdeals over the summer that weren't handled to my liking (then again...are they ever?) I want to attempt counting the DD game @ Barona. I get free Disneyland & have family in SD & LA...plenty of reason to go out. I went in the Spring, 2012 & made a few hundred bucks very quickly without even counting. Unfortunately, I wasn't really in a position to risk much...& my streak was ended because I'm dumb & didn't quite "get" the hand signals (some dealers were more helpful than others).

I've been to Barona 3 times and it's a nice resort/casino. Clean, probably the friendliest staff I've encountered (to the point where it's kinda creepy how friendly they are), spacious floor, and the crowd isn't depressing looking as other Indian Casinos.

Single decks been gone for a while now, but the DD they have is very beatable. The food there is really good too so you and your GF shouldn't have to worry eating there.

I was just looking at their (Barona's) web page and the hotel reservations page claims that the hotel is sold out every single night on the calendar (ie, for the next several months). That can't possibly be right....

I'd kind of like to go check it out. Assuming I can somehow get reservations at the hotel, does anyone know what level of play it will take for a new player to get the room comped?

You might try again. I went to their barona.com website, chose hotel, chose reservations, and got this:

So only Feb 21 and a couple of January Saturdays are sold out for the next 3 months, according to this. The rest between 119 and 179 for the most part. I'm not a club member, just asked the website, so anyone should get offered this, I would think.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

Yeah, I'm seeing something similar now. I guess it was just temporarily broken.

In case anyone is planning to visit Valley View Casino in the northern part of San Diego county be advised that they are closed for remodeling until January 17th. They are referring to it as a "head-to-toe" remodel including an expanded buffet.
