If the count is really low (like a true count of -8 to -12) should you ever hit or double a 12. For example, if you had a 12 vs. a dealer 5 or 6 should you double or hit? (although I know strategy tells you to always stay in this situation) The bigger question is: since most true counts don't get that low, do counting experts just avoid those instances when teaching new counters the techniques of card counting? and is there a point where the count is so low that you alter your play to go against normal card counting basic strategy?

If you're playing with a big enough spread, say $5 to over $100, a few hands at -10 won't hurt the overall EV too much.

Doubling a 12 might give you some cover

I think the only way it would be right to double a 12 is if the counter kept a side count of 7s/8s/9s and there were an abundance of those cards (and a deficit of 10-value cards) to be dealt.
