I work at a casino and was asked why the house advantage is greater when the dealer only has one card which I learned is called European blackjack. I am wondering why that is and what are the house advantages for both. Thanks

The above answer pretty much sums it up.

Obviously there is no house advantage in the late draw itself. The house advantage in european blackjack comes from the late "peek" for dealers blackjack.
With hole-card rules, whenever the dealer does not turn up his hole card, the player knows the dealer doesn't have a blackjack.

At first glance there seems to be no difference to european no hole card rules, since the hand is lost in both cases when the dealer has a blackjack, so any player decision on his hand makes no difference on the result (the loss).
But at second glance, a player would never double down or split his hand against a dealers blackjack, since he will then lose his additional wager. With european rules, this affects the players game dramatically - since he can never know for sure that the dealer won't have a blackjack (on ten or ace up of course) he must be more cautious of double down and split decisions. In fact the should never double down 11 vs. T, and only split Aces against T (but not against A), because his additional bet is lost on dealers blackjack.

The european no hole card rule limits the double down and split decisions of the players (in favour for the house).

At the companion site wizardofodds, the Euro-No-Hole-Card rule adds 0.11% to the House Advantage. Again, due to the House win if the Customer splits, or Doubles against a 10-value or Ace.
The 0.11% is for both splitting and doubling losing if the Dealer draws Blackjack. The majority of this advantage is when the Dealer's one card is an Ace.
Some people need to reimagine their thinking.
