It got me thinking about that how one of the best wins I had when I was young was a bet on the wrong horse.
This forum must have some great stories of accidental wins, anyone want to share some?

Sigh I wish I had an accidental win. In Jan I threw away a dealt 4oak for $200 when I only had 3 cards by accident. Axel wanted to punch me in throat when I told him I did that

I did that in horses also. I hit a trifecta in the race after the Belmont Stakes this year when I accidentally switched two horses. Paid a little more than $1,600 for $4 ticket, so that was a nice end to the day.
Can I count the time I tried to throw $700 in cash on red at roulette, but the croupier told me no cash play and the ball landed in 0? That felt like a nice accidental win.

Supposedly, you can ask the casino for a review of the last few hands and correct a play like that.
It can't hurt to try.Quote: billryanSupposedly, you can ask the casino for a review of the last few hands and correct a play like that.
1) Played 1 hand of $5 9/7 db vp to see how much coin-in per point.
drew baby quads while holding 2 cards for a $2k hand pay
2) played 1 hand of $2 9/7 db vp to see how much coin-in per point.
got dealt quad aces for a $1.6k hand pay
have blown the $ since then :(
if it was a class 2 machine (ie: ny racinos), would you have gotten that card back again on the draw?Quote: GWAESigh I wish I had an accidental win.

As far as me bumbling into a big win....I was with some friends from out of town and they wanted to do some gambling. So we went to go play craps for a little while, had some fun, we all made a small profit of a few hundred bucks. Not bad. They asked what kind of games I play, I said mostly VP. They never heard of it or at least didn't know what it was or how to play. So I scrounged around and found a $5 / $10 denom VP machine with 9/6 JOB. I was going to play a little bit anyway and figured I'd throw my profits at the $5 denom (and it's not like $5 denom was out of my price range or anything, I just would'a prefered to play something with lower denom).
Anyway, I put in a few hundred, started playing, and quickly hit a four of a kind for $625. They thought it was amazing, etc. etc. I played a little bit longer, staying around $1k in credits in the machine. They said play $10 denom, I'm like no, they like yes, I'm like no, they say to do it, I'm like okay fine, but if I lose $100, not going to play it anymore.
A few hands later, I hit a 4oak for $1,250. Okay, now we're cooking. I'm not gonna play much more...if I lose $200 from where I am now, just gonna call it quits. Hit a few flushes, full houses, etc. Then a 4oak. Then another. And another. Probably the best I had ever run concerning 4oaks. They just kept coming. I think I hit 7 4oaks, all said and done. Hit so many, in quick succession, I don't think I'd believe it if someone else said they hit that many so quickly. A few were hit when slot dog was walking away from paying me. The longest in between getting paid and hitting another was maybe 20 minutes at the most. Just kept hitting them, and in between I was getting some flushes and whatnot to keep the credits up. I don't remember the exact amount of profit, but it was just shy of $10k, IIRC. I remember thinking it was a bit over $10k, but forgot I had to subtract my buy-in at the craps table and buy-in at the VP machine, which brought it to slightly below $10k profit.
I was pissed that he didn;t let me know because I would have rather went straight home than to a casino, but $20k eased the pain a little.
I put that on most of my cards. But I accidentally picked Hawaii. It closed at Wyoming -3.5 which will probably make it the best parlay leg of the whole season. And my dyslexic ass is on the wrong side.
Obviously, every other leg won. Wyoming led or tied most of the game. At 10 - 10 in the 4th they drove inside the 10 but had to settle for a field goal. A lucky break, as Hawaii could not win by 3 on their own fg. They would need a td to win and they got it. 17 -13 final.
A heartbreaker for all the smart parlay card players, as the sharp sides crushed it all day and this was the last game and the juiciest of all.
A nice win for me and the potential for a very nice one headed into tomorrow.
Quote: RigondeauxIt was a pretty good week for parlay cards. The best leg in college was the Wyoming Hawaii game. Wyoming was +3.5 on the cards and +1 irl. Total was pretty low.

I actually had Hawaii but fell asleep before it was over. I had a very good day with a record of 7-1 but definitely got lucky on a couple.
Quote: SkittleCar1I'm a minimum bet player. Playing craps on my birthday a few years ago. Just me on one side...old guy on the other. I indulge for $1 each on the hard 6 & hard 8. Old guy shooting. Hard 8.....parlay....hard 8...hard 8...hard 8...hard 8. Didn't have the cajones to leave $100 up there.
That game is so complicated. I don't understand how anyone can play it.
Needless to say I stopped looking at the reflections and look at my actual cards now.
I went to Vegas with him that year and told him he should place a Moneyline bet on the Patriots so that no matter who won he would finish a winner. He chose to stick with his pick and the Giants, of course, went on to beat the 19-0 Patriots.
He would have never made this bet had his friend not asked him to place the wager on his hometown team.
So they come back to Roosevelt and I want to bet the number 1 horse, but I mistakenly ask for $10 on the A. Clerk thinks I said 8 and prints out the ticket. No refunds or exchanges. He offers to hold it to see if anyone wants such a ticket but I get stuck with a 38-1 unknown. Race starts and the #1 horse breaks stride and causes two other horses to go wide. The 8 horse goes wire to wire and I win about $500. I'm a Senior in HS ,earning about $25 a week working part time. Pissed away half of it and used the rest for beer, pot and comic books.
Has to be a LOT of losing spins on this machine to cover that kind of a win.
in the 80s companies had this thing ESOP - employee stock ownership plans
my small company gave every employee including me 100 shares - it was a penny stock - it was worth almost nothing - I forgot about it
years later when it was completely forgotten I got a letter
my old company had been bought out and my shares were now worth $5,000.
at that time, $5K was a pretty good sum of money for me
I almost lost consciousness

Nice. A similar thing happened to my Mom about twenty five years ago. She did a project for a company and somehow got put in their pension plan. Fifteen years goes by and the company changes hands and then is bought out by Home Depot. She gets a form letter telling her she is not eligible to be put on Home Depots pension plan so they are offering her a buyout. She gets a check for about $300 and laughs about it. A month later, she gets a second check for almost $15,000 and a notification that the next check will be the final one. Another month goes by and we are all anticipating and speculating on how much it will be. It finally arrived and was only for about $600. Disappointing but it was found money. She gave each of us $1,000 and bought $1,000 savings bonds for all the grandchildren. The older I get, the better I recall things that never happened
Quote: billryanI bet harness horses quite a bit in my youth. Mostly at Roosevelt Raceway, but occasionally at OTB. One particular stretch, the horse were at Yonkers so I got used to OTB and the letters they used, instead of post numbers. Post One was the A horse, ect, ect.

when I first started betting horses I was young and dumb
I ordered a trifecta system from the Gamblers Book Club
the system was: take the favorite out and box the next 7 horses - a $1 box cost $210 - the guy had all kinds of charts and sh.. showing that his system was big winner
I don't think I really believed the system was a winner but I did it anyway - I had cash from counting cards at BJ
I did it 4 times and won twice - both times longshots were in the money - once for a payout of $2,200 and once for a payout of $1800
when that happened I didn't know WTF was going on - could this stupid system really be a winner?
so, I decided to go over a ton of past statistics to see if it could possibly really be a winner
and guess what: you guessed it - the system was definitely not a winner - I was just lucky - and the writer was a fraud

Back in the early 80s I worked for a small (200 person) software company that got bought by British Petroleum. For organizational and legal reasons we ended up as part of BP North America. The main responsibility of BPNA at the time was their Purdhoe Bay oil fields in Alaska, something we down in Silicon Valley had absolutely no involvement with. We went about doing our thing and they pretty much ignored us.
About 2 years later BP lawyers figured out some sort of tax scam centered on the profits from the Alaskan oil. Every US employee of BPNA was given a bunch of BP shares thru an ESOP. Under the ESOP rules I couldn't sell the shares until either I was no longer employed by a BP subsidiary or 5 years (which ever came first). When I changed jobs in 1987 I immediately sold my shares. Ended up with just under $70K. being a young hippie hacker it didn't really sink in and I just stuck it in a bank and ignored. Ahh youth.
Thinking I had been given some priceless information, I told my Dad about it and asked for a loan to get started. Rather than discourage me, he offered to lend me $500 on one condition. I go to the library, get three months worth of newspapers and document the results of the system. About halfway through, the results were mixed when my father threw a twist into it. He said from now on, also record the results on the two horse on either side of the horses the comic picked. It turned out , to my surprise, that simply betting any one post position would give better results and there was no hidden message in the strip. Dream crushed.
I still have no idea why that comic strip was always on the racing page. Maybe I just misunderstood the key to deciphering it.
