I forgot there was a Big Wins area here, I can't resist bragging a bit on my wife's behalf. She rolled $40 up into $525 at Three Card Poker the other night with an hour and a half of great luck. Straight flush on the 2nd or 3rd hand, trips two hands after that, made her pair-plus $10 instead of $5 in time for more trips, and then another hour of on again off again straights, pairs and flushes. She's never played the game before, and may never play again. I told her to write a book selling her system, she can honestly claim that she's a huge lifetime winner, and that her 'typical' session multiplies her bankroll 8-10x and more. Look for it in the gambling section of your favorite bookstore!

Congrats to your wife on the nice session! Not sure how the casinos manage to do it, but I'm pretty sure first timers experience something like this at least 9 times out of 10. At least.

It's a phenomenon called "survivorship bias". First-timers who lose are less likely to have a second time gambling.

I definitely believe this, but I'm still quite into gambling even though I lost the first time, basically when I immediately turned 21. I really didn't get into it until my parents took me to Vegas 8 months later, and I still lost that trip too (but only $60).

Funny... I think first timers win all most all the time too. This can't be true of course..but every time I'm with a gambling virgin. They win. Must be conformation bias huh?
True story, the first time I played BJ at a real casino. I turned a $100 buy in into $1000 at a nickel table at the monte carlo. Good variance that day.

First time I tried 3-5-7 Poker at the Rio I hit 3 Kings in my dealt 3 cards on first hand. Nobody else at the table was hitting anything, and they werent too happy that the newcomer took the good cards. Had to go to a show in about half hour so played a few more hands and left up about $800.
