Most video roulette machines I've seen with 36 are listed as a 36 for 1 payout, which is equivalent standard 35 to 1 payout on the roulette wheel. 36 for 1 payout includes your initial bet in the payout. Sometimes you have to be careful, as some video roulette machines include a 35 for 1 payout listed which further increases the odds to the house, along with the increase in game speed.

Yes, note the the tricky preposition: "to" and "for" are different. With "to" you get your original bet back, with "for" you don't. So:
35 to 1
36 for 1
...are the same thing.
35 to 1
36 for 1
...are the same thing.

The operative word here is tricky!
I've often seen articles on gambling wherein this "to" and "for" are either explained more fully or at least set forth briefly to alert the reader. I would imagine that whatever video slot machine the original poster on this thread was referring to, there was no such explanatory note. I realize the "real estate" on the face of a slot machine is limited but certain critical issues should be addressed.
Las Vegas seems to not really be all that concerned about disclosure whether it be hotel rooms and occupancy taxes or hotel rooms and resort fees or taxi rates and tunnels or strip clubs and taxicab drivers. All those signs about "loose slots" but no sign about "to" and "for".
Yet, all those casino managers keep complaining about declining numbers of tourists in Vegas. I wonder if the MBA types who crunch numbers about Heads in Beds and Airplane Passengers and the like, ever stop to think that a more refreshing and honest approach to the gambling customer just might make financial sense.
Why are gamblers going to nearby Indian casinos in ever increasing numbers and not returning to Las Vegas casinos? Is it the economy? Is it the body scans? Or is it simply that all the deceptive trade practices in Las Vegas simply take a toll on gamblers?

Normally, slot and Video Poker machines take your bet, reducing the number of credits you have. Therefore, whatever it pays, is FOR the bet it took.
Similarly, table game side bets such as those at Let It Ride and Carribbean Stud, the dealer takes the chip before dealing, therefore will pay using FOR procedures. Other side bets, where the chip wagered remains on the table, uses TO procedures.
Keno, sports bets, raffles and lotteries use FOR procedures and terminology.
Machines that simulate table games are different. IF the winning bet remains on the layout, the machine is using TO procedures, and SHOULD use TO terminology. If it uses FOR terminology, it does so in an effort to confuse and deceive the player.
