Three casinos in historic buildings lost fight to prevent seventy million dollar Bronco Billys expansion as City is seen to vote for economic development instead of historic-style stagnation

Cripple Creek, near the base of Pikes Peak, changed from nearly abandoned "ghost town" of historic fame mainly for labor strife into thriving gambling town in 1990s and now has nine casinos and dozens of cultural events.

Similar expansion related economic disputes appear to be taking place in nearly Colorado Springs.

As has become quite common, its often Casino versus Casino when it comes to zoning or tax matters.

As was expected, after losing at the zoning level the casinos are now going to be duking it out in court over this first use of the City's Special Projects Ordinance which creates the possibility of exceptions to the stringent city-wide Historic Zoning Ordinance. Essence of the claim is that one casino's new steel and glass hotel should not be allowed when other businesses in the city are mandated to have "historical look" construction materials and appearance. Essentially it is a "invest enough money and the city will let you buy your way out of the economic stagnation imposed by the historic zoning ordinances that others have to endure".

Its an interesting legal concept but its also interesting because its really a Casino versus Casino battle.

Its a zoning battle in which the opponents are other casinos and its similar to the Reservation Trust land deals that some Indian tribes want to obtain geographically desirable casino locations and find that their only opponents are other Indian tribes that already have geographically desirable casino locations.

Towns such as California's Solvang go thru the same thing as it has a Historical Scandinavian Appearance District yet some land owners want to have gas stations and the like that do not conform to this faux "Ye Olde Swedish Inn" façade.

Downtown cripple creek is pretty cool. I was there between Xmas and new years several years ago. It looked like something out of a Hallmark movie with decorated department stores, shops, and restaurants... Except that every one of those buildings was really a casino.

How is the gambling and craps there?

Anything special like 100x odds, 1000x odds, true odds promo bets of any sort?

You'd put the storefront casino right out of business with a good run at 1000x odds! I think the biggest thing about Cripple Creek (and Blackhawk/Central City) is the availability of new and unique table games.

Sometimes those historic district rules have weird results. One Seattle sign reads "steam baths: fifty cents" and every now and then someone wanders in and has to be told that it is a protected sign from the Gold Rush era, we don't offer any steam baths and we sure don't offer them at fifty cents each.

My understanding of the Colorado gambling situation is that they are all Sweat The Money joints that cater to locals. If the standard games are at Not A Bargain rules and Not A Bargain odds, then a steady supply of innovative games is just about all they can offer.

As someone joked recently about the Sports Gambling Decision: "A failed casino in every state". In Colorado its people being milked for all they've got even if you have to hold music and film festivals to get them in the door.

Sometimes these Native American or ‘off the beaten path’ casinos have +EV games. Of course, people only talk about them after the games no longer exist.

The two most famous and publicly known were the Casino Barona Mississippi Stud game and the Jack Binion single deck BJ.

The moment CZR bought Horseshoe, this was the first game they pulled.

I’m not sure if the Barona Mississippi Stud game still exists.

I visited there many years ago and picked up various casino chip sets. A very memorable place with some interesting casinos - it was mid-morning so I only picked up chips.

Coming to Cripple Creek from the south, the internet suggested I went via Rte 67 (Phanton Canyon Rd) from Rte 50, but it eventually becomes unsurfaced. Luckily it was hire car and very scenic, but next time I might go the other way in!

I'm planning to go to Cripple Creek in late June and will provide a report upon my return. Any members in the Colorado Springs area interested in meeting up?

Beware the fine print in the rental agreement. Often unpaved or non maintained roads means your insurance waiver is void so towing and repairs will be at your expense. Or at least that is what their lawyers will allege.

I'm sorry, I haven't put down anything in words yet.

Briefly, Cripple Creek is an eccentric little gambling town. Very rustic. All the casinos are little and seem to be struggling to keep the doors open. I'll briefly say my favorite casino is the Brass Ass. After playing blackjack for about 15 minutes the dealer complimented me on my good play. I thanked him for the compliment and asked him his favorite website on gambling. He answered correctly.

I was there for only about six hours and don't know that my report will be all that great. To be honest, all the properties seemed more or less the same. Yup, as I write this the details are coming back to me. I should put my comments in writing before I forget.

Cripple creek had new/unique carnival games both times I visited. None really took off (rabbit hunter, deuces wild, 5 card draw, something with two differently ranked jokers) but it's fun to see them in action.

Well, you did give your word but the main thing I'm interested in about Cripple Creek is how a two dollar craps table with 50x odds there compares to a ten dollar table with 100x odds at the Cromwell. The 100x odds at the Cromwell would mainly be a fantasy for me except perhaps when I had consumed too much Guinness, but 50x odds at a two dollar table would be a reality for me for at least a portion of my bankroll.

Just don't sit down and gamble at a slot machine with abandoned credits in it (or pick up a chip off the floor -- same crime). You'll be arrested, sentenced to forced labor, put on probation, and be labeled a criminal.

Better yet, don't go at all. Teach them a lesson for not warning you of this at the door with a sign.

I didn't bother to note the odds allowed there. A decade ago I made a big deal over 10x odds and above. However, so few people play craps like me -- betting the don't pass and don't come with max odds.

Don't get me wrong, you should max out the odds, if you're comfortable with the risk, but also play where the service is good and you have a good time. I'd rather have good service and a good time at a 3-4-5x table than a lousy one at 100x.

I think we all say that but I'd rather just win lots of money and that means maxing the odds even though I ain't even comfortable with my line bet, much less the odds bet.

Agreed. If any of you are ever back towards cripple Creek, let me know. That's the closest casino to me and have played there a few times. I don't mind snowy roads so I will probably be up there a few times this t much else to do some days.

Do you play craps? Is that two dollar line bet but up to fifty dollars odds bet table still in existence?

since the poker room is going to be closed tomorrow til thursday, i guess ill have nothing to do but play a little BJ. sure dont want to lose $1800 on the double eagles craps machine again. i only played because it gives a lot of points compared to vegas casinos.

any advice as to which casino in cripple creek with live BJ (most seem to be $10 min and 3-2 which makes it affordable for low rollers spreading bets $10-2 hands of $150 or so. but where should i play if i want free hotel if things go sour at the table? who gives comps out more generously? wildwood? century? brass ass? elsewhere?

i would like to meet up with a local who is good at blackjack. also id like to know which places will let u play and who will ban u and if they do, i hope its BJ only, for there is only 1 poker room here.

also be curious to know if u can get a decent mailer anywhere for signing up and putting a lot of play thru a machine?
