The man was one of my heroes. He had a vision and saw that it came true. He carved an empire and a town out of a remote corner of Nevada. I only met him once, and it was brief, but I struck up a friendship with someone who worked closely with him and heard many a tale.

The man new how to run a casino. He treated his players with respect and comped well.

I have stayed at the Riverside many times since I turned 21 in 1986. Always good game rules. I think today they are one of only three casinos in Nevada to have 3-2 single-deck blackjack. The car museum has three of my license plate displays.
To be honest, the place is kind of a dive, but in a good way. I have cheated on the Riverside a number of times, but it has always felt like a home away from home for me.
As to Don Laughlin, a classic American success story. RIP.
