Good way to get Facebook started. The casino is down to bare minimum. They've closed the buffet and the Mexican restaurant. They are down to two cafes and the steakhouse that has been there since the 60's.

Be aware that this hotel charges a resort fee. I think it's $10/night. Even though I live near Vegas, I still might do this anyway.

It's actually $6 a night. With tax, it comes to a total of $7.12 a night.

I wonder if I'll be able to get my room charges comped?

Sounds like a good deal as far as a room charge goes, but if the casino is an ancient property that has closed a variety of its food and entertainment places it sounds like a desperate measure to get bodies in the door. What will they find? The latest slots? Well trained and experienced dealers? A festive atmosphere featuring happy, successful people?

The "Vegas Experience"?

I stayed at the Sahara in May of 2009 for one night, and at that point I did get the "resort charge", (which, when considering the Sahara, is kind of like getting hit with a corkage fee at McDonalds when you walk in with a bottle of water, but I digress), removed. They can't do it at the front desk or players club, but a host can do it for you and they take it off your earned comps.

I didn't get in until 9 or so, and gambled 3-4 hours that night and about 2-3 hours the next morning, mostly on .25 or .50 VP. I was somewhat impressed with how easy it was to earn comps. I received a free buffet, (which was due to some special promo and wasn't worth much seeing as the buffet wasn't open when I was there), had breakfast at the cafe and my resort fee taken care of, and still ended up with about $23 available. I figured that if I arrived early in the morning I probably wouldn't have too hard a time earning a House of Lords comp.

The property is pretty worn, both the public facilities and the rooms, but if you don't need a lot of glitz and glamor I think its a pretty decent value and with the monorail a short walk away, (at least for now...), the rest of the strip isn't too hard to reach.

SBE is a pretty high powered corporation to own such a shabby casino. The deal was signed on March 2, 2007 just before the 22 April deal was signed to sell Strat0sphere. Both new owners paid a lot for the properties.
SBE paid $300-$400 Sahara
Goldman Sachs paid $475m Stratosphere, and $165m for vacant lot

I enjoy the casino @ Sahara. Probably just because it was the first place I stayed and played at in Vegas back in 1985. The vibe is not the same--they had good shows then (George Carlin was there when I was; that was a riot) and there were fighters and entourages gambling. Though that vibe is long gone, I have enjoyed gambling there, met nice people, had good dealers, and am still ahead in my play there. The last reason may be why I like it...

You get enough comps for craps betting ($3-$5 pass line w/ 3-5x odds and two come bets was my pattern for 4 hours a day) to get a comped visit using the dollars or actual comps from a host. The last time we had a room there, two nights were comped and we had to use $25 comp dollars for the other--that was never charged to our account--and still had comp dollars left. We only used the rooms for a pit stop, but I would consider staying there at some point.

Our problem with the comp dollars was that we were leaving the next day and it was late--we just bought a bunch of gifts from the shop to bring back with us. That was a good bonus--we spent nothing on them because I was not playing for comps in the first place!!

I am hoping for a Vegas rebound and a renovation...I'd hate to loose any more of the older properties. I know times change but...

They recently did another one of those Rooms For One Dollar deals via Twitter messages and a code. I didn't even sign into their twitter feed much less their website but I think at one dollar (plus that darned resort fee) you still can't go wrong. Its a low rollers place but its a generous one as far as comps go.
