travel from nevada to california

I recall that sometime ago the State of California did not allow anyone to enter CA with any fruits or vegetables. Is this still the case. I am planning on driving from Las Vegas to Palm Springs and I usually have a can or package of nuts to munch on while driving. Would this be considered in violation of CA's state law. The nuts may or may not have been grown in California.

I took I-15 into California (barely) last week, and there was no checkpoint or anything. Maybe it's a secondary offense where if you're pulled over for speeding, you also need to prove the origin of your nuts?

They're gonna love your nuts.

The California agricultural inspection station is manned intermittently but focuses on home-grown fruits and vegetables since those are more likely to transmit various pests. Nuts, particularly if you have the can right there in the car, are not of interest to them. Many times all you need say is "Vegas" and they wave you through the checkpoint since they focus on vehicles that have been out in remote areas. RVs and pickup trucks get the most attention. An apple quarantine is in effect but its for homegrown apples, not store bought.

Last time I went thru it was long ago but as I slowed, I rolled the window down and as I was motioned forward by the inspector I leaned out and said but one word: "Vegas". He quickly increased the speed of his arm motions and waved me right through. Four males in a rented car coming from Vegas are not likely to be carrying Gypsy Moth eggs picked up in some remote arroyo.

Its an occasional traffic delay but its no big deal. And there is a way to drive around the inspection station if you really want to. Nobody much cares.

About 5 years ago I drove for, Las Vegas to San Francisco (never do that, fly if you can.) I was waiting for the checkpoint, none came up even though we drove thru miles and miles of CA agricultural land. I was amazed how big it really is. We crossed on some state highway or USA Routs, not the interstate so might have made a difference.
