So at a "just for fun" casino I've played at, a novelty bet is offered, where you triple your bet and take exactly 2 more cards. The casino uses 6 decks in a shoe, dealer stands on soft 17. The question is: when, if ever, should I triple down?

Hmmm that's really interesting, is there surrender after you triple down, I'm not sure there would ever be a great opportunity to take two cards without counting and having an extremely low count against a six. Considering the average cars value of 6.5 , in theory anything hand about a 8 would be odds on to simply bust out your hand

My gut answer is no - the risk of a bust looks to be too great. Remember, drawing 10-10 always loses.
I did some quick number crunching, and at first glance, it looks like the closest you come to winning is tripling down on a soft 12 with the dealer showing a 6, but that's still something like a 4% edge for the house (and remember, you tripled your bet) - and you're breaking up a pair of aces to do it.
